Cronos: The New Dawn was announced Sunday at the Xbox Showcase, part of the larger Summer Game Fest lineup. This new horror entry is developed by Bloober, the same studio responsible for the Silent Hill 2 Remake, so they certainly know what it takes to fit into a genre where fans have high expectations. The game was a surprise to be part of the full presentation, but the trailer has offered fans an exciting new look at how The New Dawn will handle gameplay moving forward as well.

Cronos: The New Dawn Brings a Dead Space Feel

Cronos, the newest sci-fi horror from Bloober Team, has frequently been compared to Dead Space, and the similarities are certainly there. However, the team wants to make clear that this is not an imitation, but a game that can stand on its own. As the official Steam page describes, The New Dawn is “a pulse-pounding, third-person survival horror game where time is your deadliest weapon — and your worst enemy. Survive a brutal future, dive back in time, and stop nightmarish creatures from merging into unstoppable abominations.”

PC Gamer gave a bit of a breakdown on Cronos already from their previous trailer release, and had this to say about it.

But scooping people out of time isn’t the Traveler’s only job: As seen in today’s gameplay trailer, they’re also responsible for filling sticky bad guys full of lead. These creatures are known as “the Orphans,” and they’re “twisted, body-horror monstrosities born from humanity’s darkest nightmares.”

Like any good infestation, the Orphans are also tough to get rid of. The trailer is entitled “Don’t Let Them Merge,” which Bloober Team says is one of the game’s “core mechanics”: If you don’t burn an enemy after it goes down, its body can be absorbed by other Orphans, which makes them “faster, stronger, more resilient, and far more horrifying,” with additional combat abilities.

The ultimate goal in Cronos is to find several major figures in history by traveling through time, who had been taken out by the apocalypse. Unfortunately, the essence of these figures that you pick up will also haunt you. How much can you handle while you slowly go insane? That is the heart of the question. Of course, you also will have to survive the orphans and all they have in store. Check out the newest trailer below to see exactly how the gameplay will look in real time, and look back on the first trailer as well.

Final Thoughts

Hopefully, Cronos can deliver something fresh and new and deliver on the horror experience fans have come to expect from Bloober Team. So far, things look very promising. While there is no official release date, the game is expected to be released this fall. Cronos will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC. Check out the trailers and see what the team is cooking up for this sci-fi thrill ride.
