You GUYS! It’s happening! It’s actually happening! After years of whispers, rumors, and frankly, a lot of desperate pleading from fans like me, Square Enix finally dropped the bombshell we’ve all been waiting for. Get ready to lose all your free time because a full-blown Dragon Quest VII Remake is on its way, and it looks absolutely incredible.
Announced during the latest Nintendo Direct, this isn’t just some lazy port. It’s a ground-up reimagining of the PlayStation classic, Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past. Mark your calendars, cancel your plans, and prepare your sick-day excuses for February 5, 2026. This masterpiece is coming to basically everything: Nintendo Switch 2 (heck yeah!), the OG Switch, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and of course, PC via Steam and the Microsoft Store. My body is ready.
Okay, so you’ve played the original a dozen times, right? You know the story of Auster, Maribel, and Prince Kiefer inside and out. You’re probably wondering what makes this remake so special. Well, strap in, because Square Enix is pulling out all the stops.
The first thing that smacked me right in the face was the art style. Forget standard 3D models. They’re calling it a “hand-crafted aesthetic,” and they mean it literally. The character models are based on actual physical dolls! The whole world has this stunning, diorama-like feel, like you’re playing through a living storybook. It’s a bold move, and honestly, it’s bursting with more charm than a sack full of Slimes.
But a fresh coat of paint isn’t everything. Here’s what else they’re packing in:

For those of you who missed this absolute gem back in 2000 (I forgive you… mostly), let me set the scene. You play as a young fisherman’s son living on the tiny, isolated island of Estard. It’s the only landmass in the entire world. Or so everyone thinks.
Of course, you and your buddies—the rebellious Prince Kiefer and the mayor’s sassy daughter, Maribel—stumble upon an ancient secret. By assembling mysterious stone fragments, you can travel back in time to islands that have been sealed away from existence by a great evil. Your mission? Restore these forgotten lands to the present, piece by piece, and uncover the truth behind their disappearance. It’s a sprawling, emotional journey about loss, hope, and piecing together a shattered world. It’s peak Dragon Quest.
Pre-orders are already live, and you know I’ve already smashed that button. There are a few different versions to choose from, because of course there are.
There’s the standard edition, a Digital Deluxe Edition with 48 hours early access (tempting!), and the big one: the Physical Collector’s Edition. This glorious box of treasures comes with:
I’m already clearing a space on my shelf for that Ship in a Bottle. Don’t judge me.
The Dragon Quest VII Remake looks like it’s shaping up to be the definitive version of an already legendary game. Square Enix is treating this classic with the love and respect it deserves, while also making it fresh and exciting for a new generation of players. February 2026 can’t come soon enough!
