Following the high-profile streamer and cosplayer Emiru, many female creators had been experiencing a palpable sense of unease as TwitchCon approached. In the days leading up to the event, some planned to attend reluctantly or even skip the event entirely. Unfortunately, their concerns would be confirmed on the very first day due to a frightening incident. Does this event not highlight a persistent and alarming problem within the convention space?

The Unwanted Encounter at the Convention

Viewers can witness this encounter take place in a newly released video, showing a tall man rapidly approaching Emiru from outside her field of vision before he grabs her in an unwanted hug. Thankfully, security personnel quickly intervene, shoving the man away, and the individual is then seen clutching what appears to be a pen. From that description, the safety of women creators at these events needs to be properly addressed.

Twitch responded to the alarming situation, issuing an official statement. The company emphasized that its number one priority was to maintain the safety and security of all TwitchCon attendees. After condemning the individual’s behavior, the company confirmed that event security and law enforcement responded on site according to existing protocols.

Not only was Emiru’s attacker banned from the premises indefinitely, but he was also not allowed to attend future activities, both online and at future in-person events. Moreover, the company stated that it would coordinate with the affected creator’s team and continue to cooperate with any law enforcement investigations. How are convention organizers planning to proactively prevent these kinds of intrusions from happening moving forward?

The Emiru Effect on Con Safety

Following the Emiru attack, several new security measures were implemented for the remainder of the convention, with Twitch increasing the security presence at the Meet and Greet attendee check-in points. Additionally, more security personnel will be positioned directly around the participating streamers for extra protection. Sadly, some fans may be disappointed with the company’s announcement, stating that plus-one guests can no longer be accommodated for the remaining Meet and Greets. Although these steps are smart and good preventative measures, fans still wonder if they address the root of the issue.

Given the large number of people attending TwitchCon, is adding even more security perimeter truly a solution to stop a threat that could simply materialize from within a crowd? This entire Emiru situation reveals how public figures must face a challenging reality, where sometimes a fan’s enthusiasm can cross a line into something genuinely terrifying. Due to this realization, what should be a fun celebration can quickly turn into a security drill, as something as simple as an autograph request can become a complicated and dangerous affair.
