A teenager from South Dakota has changed his plea to guilty for sending threatening messages over Fortnite to developers at Epic Games. Federal authorities indicted a nineteen-year-old man named Jayden Griffin in December 2024. This situation involved Griffin sending a series of electronic communications to Epic staff over several weeks in October and November of that year. Did he truly understand the severe consequences of his online actions?
Griffin ultimately pleaded guilty to the specific federal charge of threatening interstate commerce. This charge applies because Epic Games is based in North Carolina, while he was in South Dakota. As a result, he now faces a potential maximum sentence of five years in a federal prison. Additionally, Griffin could face a fine of up to $250,000, which could be accompanied by a prison sentence.
Even if he avoids having to do time, he must still face up to three years of supervised release after he’s set free. These various punishments are undoubtedly life-altering penalties for sending threatening messages online. Furthermore, he provided a clear statement admitting his guilt in a formal court document, acknowledging that he sent messages threatening to kill Epic Games employees.
In addition, Griffen fully intended for those messages to be perceived as genuine threats. Alongside this admission, he also officially entered his guilty plea during a hearing at the end of September. This new plea marked a significant reversal from his initial not guilty plea entered back in January 2022. Even the presiding judge found him competent to enter the plea, as he believed that Griffin’s statement was both knowing and voluntary.
As the court sets up to determine his sentence at a future date, Epic Games has chosen not to provide any public comment on the matter. Given the severity of the entire case, the recent trend of game studios adopting a more aggressive legal stance against individuals who harass their employees continues to grow. So, does this signal a new era of accountability for online threats?
Besides Epic Games, another company that has shown to be particularly assertive is Bungie, which actively pursues and wins substantial judgments against people who threaten its staff. Hopefully, these serious legal repercussions can deter others from engaging in similar behavior. However, whether the fear of federal charges will finally stop these so-called keyboard warriors from their threatening tirades remains to be seen. Still, many in the industry will closely watch the outcome of Griffin’s sentencing.
