Every six months, the Marvel Rivals team puts out an update, which usually consists of buffs and nerfs for characters, a new map, 1-2 new characters, and new team-ups. The team typically releases two of these updates per year, usually starting with a new season and followed by a mid-season update later. This is a great system, as it keeps the game fresh with new content year-round, while also allowing enough time in between updates for players to become familiar with the changes. Season 2.5 starts May 30th, so let’s break down these changes and what they mean for the game.
Since season 2 was released with the Krakoa map sets, many fans theorized that the new map in season 2.5 would have to be Arakko, the other mutant island from the comics. Don’t expect a comic-accurate map, though; the story of Marvel Rivals changes the location from a lush, martian city to a cold, robot compound assimilated by Ultron.
The Krakoa maps have been an interesting addition to the game, implementing teleporters for quick in-and-out fights. I am looking forward to what will set the Arakko map apart from the rest.
Arguably, the biggest update coming to Marvel Rivals is the addition of Ultron! A heavily foreshadowed strategist with unique gameplay. This is the first strategist with the ability to fly, and focuses more on adding a shield rather than health. His official abilities consist of an omnidirectional dash, a drone that pocket heals whoever Ultron sends it to, and a square projection that gives shield and damage reduction to all allies who were hit with it.
There is also a Team-Up ability coming this season for Ultron. if Iron-Man and Ultron are on the same team, Ultron gets a Unibeam that pierces and heals allies while damaging enemies. His Ultimate ability is a silo of splash damage projectiles that also heals allies caught in the blast.
With each season comes new ways characters interact with each other, creating synergies and new ways to play. First (and most game-breaking in my opinion) is the new “Jeffnado” Team Up. When Storm uses her ult, Jeff can jump in and swallow enemies, damaging them over time with the tornado before spitting them out wherever you are aiming. This Ult can pull most strategists out of their Ult, so definitely be careful if the enemy team has a Storm and Jeff.
Penni and Rocket now have a team-up, where Penni gets a second nest that periodically spits out armor, and Rocket’s revive beacon now has webbing that spawns spiderbots. I see this actually being a negative as it makes Rocket’s beacon more noticeable for enemies, making it harder to revive teammates.
Ultron’s Team Up ability has already been covered, but another new Strategist Team Up is Jeff and Venom’s “Symbiote Serum”. Venom tethers himself to Jeff and at least one other ally to give constant healing over time.
“Chilling Assault” has Luna give Hawkeye the ability to change his exploding arrows into ice arrows that freeze enemies on hit. This is a huge Team Up that I see making Hawkeye more than viable in a competitive setting.
Black Widow and Punisher’s new “Operation: Microchip” gives Black Widow a new mode of fire. a laser show that pierces enemies. This could spell trouble for grouped-up teams, especially given Black Widow’s range. If you can somehow swing getting Hawkeye and Luna Snow on the team, you can freeze a team and line up a nasty collateral.
With each season, some Team Up abilities are removed, just to keep the game fresh. This season, Punisher is losing his Rocket team-up that gave him infinite ammo. Jeff is losing his Luna Snow Team Up, which gave him extra damage. Venom no longer has a Team Up with Spider-Man and Penni, and finally, Hawkeye and Black Widow no longer have a Team Up.
While there are many more minute buffs and nerfs happening to specific characters, these are the biggest changes coming to Marvel Rivals on May 30th. Want to stay up to date on Marvel Rivals?
