MTG Modern Horizons 3 (MH3) is the fifth set to launch in 2024. Prior to its upcoming release, sets like Ravnica Remastered, Murders at Karlov Manor, MTG Universes Beyond: Fallout, and Outlaws of Thunder Junction (OTJ) have already come out.

Some of them reintroduced old mechanics and added some twists to it like Morph and Disguise. On the other hand, sets such as Fallout and OTJ introduced new game mechanics like Radiation and Crime. In addition to these new game mechanics, like every other set before them, they also brought new cards into the Magic universe.

Having all that in mind, MTG fans must be dying to know what’s to come in Modern Horizons 3.

MTG Modern Horizons 3 Release Date: June 14, 2024

Modern Horizons 3 is coming out on June 14, 2024. Like every other set before this, MH3 will launch with a bunch of different products. These are inclusive of the following:

  • Play Boosters
  • Collector Boosters
  • Four Commander Decks
  • Four Collector’s Commander Decks
  • Bundle
  • Gift Bundle
  • Prerelease Packs

Play Boosters

Play Boosters in MTG was first introduced in the Murders at Karlov Manor set. It’s a new booster type that combines the old dynamics between Draft and Set Boosters. One box contains 36 packs. Each pack contains 15 cards, one of which is either a Token, an Art Card, or a Play Aide. Inside the pack will be 1-7 Common Cards, 3 Uncommon Cards, 1 Rare or Mythic Card, 1 Basic Lands, and 1 Foil Wildcard. Players can expect MH3’s Play Booster box to cost around $270.

Collector Boosters

Like the majority of other sets, MH3 will come out with Collector Booster boxes. One box contains 12 packs. Each pack contains 15 playable cards. What makes the Collector Booster different is that the cards inside consist of foils and special art cards such as Showcase and Borderless cards. Each card is guaranteed to be diverse from each other. Players can expect to pull 10 Uncommon Cards, 3 Rare or Mythic Cards, and 2 Foil Cards of any rarity. Collector Boosters will more or less cost $390.

Commander Decks

MTG Modern Horizons 3 is coming out with four preconstructed Commander Decks. These are namely Creative Energy, Eldrazi Incursion, Graveyard Overdrive, and Tricky Terrain. The precons will come out in two variants, the regular and the collector. Depending on the local game store, each precon will more or less cost $70 each, except for Eldrazi Incursion. Eldrazi decks typically cost more in the market. As for the collector precons, they’ll cost approximately $170 per deck, with the exception of the Eldrazi deck again.

Creative Energy

Creative Energy is led by Satya, Aetherflux Genius. This deck mainly focuses on the Energy mechanic which was first introduced in the Fallout set. Satya is a one generic, one blue, one red, one white 3/5 legendary creature with Menace and Haste. Whenever Satya, Aetherflux Genius attacks, create a tapped and attacking token that’s a copy of up to one other target nontoken creature you control. You get two energy counters. At the beginning of the next end step, sacrifice that token unless you pay an amount of energy counters equal to its mana value.

In a sense, Creative Energy is a tokenator deck that heavily relies on Energy counters to keep the tokens alive. Adding cards that proliferate the Energy counters is something players might want to consider when upgrading. Throwing in some cards that double or triple the tokens created on your battlefield is also recommended given that the goal of this deck is to generate tokens and swing creatures until their adversary’s demise.

Eldrazi Incursion

It’s been a while since the last Eldrazi precon deck came out. Eldrazi Unbound was previously launched back in August 2023. Fast forward 10 months later, a new Eldrazi commander is about to take over the battlefield.

Ulalek, Fused Atrocity serves as the commander of the Eldrazi Incursion deck. While players can technically run all five colors in this deck, Ulalek is still colorless due to it having Devoid. Most fans are anticipating the Eldrazi deck due to the powerful abilities it has.

Whenever you cast an Eldrazi spell, you may pay two colorless mana. If you do, copy all spells you control, then copy all other activated and triggered abilities you control. You may choose new targets for the copies. This deck is most likely going wide and cause destruction with all of the copies that will come into play.

Graveyard Overdrive

For those who thrive on playing with their graveyard, this precon might be the perfect fit. Disa the Restless is a 5/6 two generic, one black, one red, one green legendary creature who serves as the precon’s commander. She’s a graveyard specialist and tokenator hybrid who can bring creatures back and generate more creatures on the battlefield.

Whenever a Lhurgoyf permanent card is put into your graveyard from anywhere other than the battlefield, put it onto the battlefield. Whenever one or more creatures you control deal combat damage to a player, create a Tarmogoyf token.

Essentially, players might need to upgrade the precon into a Lhurgoyf tribal deck to make the most out of Disa’s first ability. This deck will mainly focus on overwhelming adversaries with both nontoken and token creatures to increase the chances of inflicting combat damage.

Tricky Terrain

If players are looking for a deck that has similar effects of mutation, Tricky Terrain might be something to look into. The precon is led by Omo, Queen of Vesuva, a 1/5 two generic, one blue/green hybrid legendary creature. Whenever Omo, Queen of Vesuva enters the battlefield or attacks, put an Everything counter on each of up to one target land and up to one target creature. Each land with an Everything counter on it is every land type in addition to its other types. Each nonland creature with an Everything counter on it is every creature type.

Basically, the deck-building process when upgrading this precon is limitless. Once Omo puts an everything counter on every creature the player controls, they can play certain tribal cards that were meant to buff specific creature types. To add the icing on the cake, players can cast all specified buffs to creatures with Everything counters.

MTG Modern Horizons 3 Bundles

When getting into a new MTG set, the bundles seem to be the bang for the buck. Bundles come in two variants, the regular and the Gift Bundle. Typically, bundles come with 9 Play Boosters, 30 Lands, and a set-exclusive spindown dice. The Gift Bundle more or less has the same features with the addition of a Collector Booster pack. In addition to the packs and accessories, all items will be stored inside a deck box that can be used for all purposes.

The regular bundle will cost approximately $70, while the Gift Bundle will cost around $120. Prices will vary depending on the local game store.

Prerelease Packs

Usually, Prerelease Packs come out during a prerelease event of a particular set. However, some stores end up selling these packs individually beyond the event. But in normal circumstances, players need to attend a prerelease event to grab these packs. Each pack should contain six Play Boosters with 20-sided Spindown dice. Those attending the event typically participate in a draft tournament, building a deck from scratch using the cards they pulled from their packs.

That’s it for everything players need to know regarding MTG Modern Horizons 3.
