The wait is over. Square Enix has finally given Final Fantasy Tactics fans something to cheer about. Almost 5 years ago, an infamous Nvidia leak had claimed that a Final Fantasy Tactics remake was in the works, but for years, there was no confirmation, even as every other game on that leak became a reality. The game has largely been accepted as not just one of the best Final Fantasy entries, but one of the best Tactical RPGs of all time. Now, the game will be coming to PS5 and PS4, thanks to a newly announced trailer that came as part of the State of Play PlayStation stream on Wednesday, June 4.

Final Fantasy Tactics: Ivalice Chronicles Modernizes A Classic

Final Fantasy Tactics originally debuted for the PS1 back in 1997, during the beginning stretch of what many refer to as the franchise’s golden era. Because the game came out as a spin-off and dropped in the same time frame as the most popular title in the series’ history, Final Fantasy VII, Tactics did not reach the same universal notoriety that Cloud Strife and friends did. That is a shame, because the storyline, music, combat, and amazing job system that is the class of the franchise are all remarkable, and carry Tactics into the top tier of Final Fantasy gaming.

Final Fantasy Tactics did get a remaster for the PSP called War of the Lions, which added new characters, some voice acting, and cut scenes. The game was eventually ported to mobile, but has not been released for any other system since. Final Fantasy Tactics: Ivalice Chronicles takes the same game and improves it even further, offering all voice acting, improved graphics, and quality of life features. Best of all, they will also be offering a classic version of the game for anyone who wants to play a version that is faithful to the original.

Per the Square Enix release, the following features will be new to the Final Fantasy Tactics: Ivalice Chronicles version.

  • A brand-new user interface – the game’s UI has been completely overhauled to make the game even more approachable and intuitive. It’s now quicker and easier to control your units, see turn order and more.
  • Updated visuals – the game’s graphics have been reworked to look great on HD displays. The vibrant 3D battlegrounds and detailed pixel art have never looked so good!
  • Voice acting – The story now features full voice acting in English and Japanese from a talented cast, including Joe Pitts (Ramza), Gregg Lowe (Delita), Hannah Melbourn (Agrias), Timothy Watson (Cidolfus), Harry McEntire (Mustadio), Ben Starr (Dycedarg), and cameos by Cody Christian (Cloud Strife from FINAL FANTASY VII remake series) and Briana White (Aerith Gainsborough from FINAL FANTASY VII remake series).
  • Tactical View – this new feature makes it easier to get the lay of the land and plan your actions across the battlefield.
  • Battle speed – Speed up battles to fly through them faster. It’s great if you want to blow through easy fights or quickly practice with different team compositions!
  • New difficulty levels – Do you want to really test your tactics, or are you in it more for the story? New difficulty levels let you adjust the game to your playstyle!
