The State of the Play event held in September of 2024 revealed a lot of things. The biggest reveal in the showcase was probably the Ghost of Yotei. This sequel to the beloved Ghost of Tsushima is set to be released in 2025. A trailer was shown about the game that gave a glimpse of what the sequel will be like. Here are some must-know details that the fans of the original game should not miss out on.

Setting & Story

The setting for Ghost of Yotei is around the lands of Mountain Yotei. The game will take place in the year 1603 when this area was outside the rule of Japan. The area and open world of the game is filled with beautiful sprawling grasslands and snowy tundras. An important thing to note that came as a surprise for most fans is that it is telling a brand-new and original story that is not related to the story of Ghost of Tsushima.

There is a 300-year gap between the Ghost of Tsushima and Ghost of Yotei. According to the Sucker Punch studios they wanted to go beyond the scope of the original game and tell a new origin story. This led to the creation of Ghost of Yotei, which features a new protagonist, a new story, and a new beautiful region.

Players will follow the story of a brand-new Ghost, this time a female character that goes by the name of Atsu. From the trailer, it appears that Atsu is a Ronin, who has traveled to Yotei and is hunting down some people. This has led to a disturbance among the already existing Ronins in the area. Atsu is being played by the actor Erika Ishii, who has also played the character of Valkyrie from Apex Legends and Ana Bray from Destiny 2.

Gameplay Details

Sucker Punch mentioned in a blog post that Ghost of Yotei will continue on the visual foundations of Ghost of Tsushima and will feature a world that is more alive and stunning. There are also a ton of new gameplay mechanics and improvements that will be coming in this game. The most notable addition is the introduction of some brand-new weapons. The trailer gave us a look at some of the weapons that Atsu will be wielding on her journey. The trailer also emphasized new animals, most notably a wolf. This has led to the speculations that there will be a companion system in the game.

Players will be able to dual-wield swords in the game, allowing them to be able to perform stunning moves. Ranged combat will also be making a return, as the protagonist was seen wielding a gun. Where the prequel allowed the Bow as the only ranged weapon option, the addition of guns will certainly shake things up. Another weapon that was featured in the trailer of Ghost of Yotei is Kusarigama, which is a traditional Japanese weapon.
