Grimshire is one of many cozy Stardew Valley-style simulation games, and it’s currently in Early Access on Steam. So far, the game has Overwhelmingly Positive Steam reviews, which shows that the game’s development and the community’s responses are promising.
In Grimshire, your character barely escapes a plague that suddenly consumed your hometown. The residents of the titular mountain village welcome you with open arms. Your job is to restore the farmhouse, and tend the fields. Meanwhile, the plague is on its way to the village, and the community must work together in order for everyone to survive.
Players must feed the villagers by maintaining the root cellar’s stock, balancing the needs of both herbivores and carnivores. Players must also prevent food from spoiling by salting, pickling, drying and smoking. Cultivating a field of crops and planting an orchard of fruit and nut trees is another requirement for the game.
Other objectives required to help the villagers survive are: taming wild critters and raising them for a steady supply of eggs, milk and meat; foraging for seeds, flowers, herbs, nuts, roots and berries and fishing in nearby marshes, rivers and lakes.
Community involvement is also needed in Grimshire. Players must gather materials and construct village projects to strengthen the community. Also, players need to donate specimens for research and discover new methods to increase the odds of survival. Befriending villagers is highly recommended. Most importantly, Grimshire also has a perma-death system, as some characters can pass away by the end of the game.
On Grimshire’s Steam page, the developer Acute Owl Studio allows players looking forward to the game to join their Discord server, as they are open to player feedback. The developer also thanks fans for their feedback and response to their previous game, Bone’s Cafe.
In their list of frequently asked questions, Acute Owl Studio said that the game is expected to be in Steam Early Access for at least one to two years. In Early Access, players can play throughout the first in-game year, with all core mechanics and the story up to the end of the first in-game year.
Also in their FAQ, they listed a list of features that will be in the game’s full version. These features include, but are not limited to: friendships and romance; settling down with your partner and getting married; starting your own family by having children; having pets; the improvement of Festivals; localizations and content surrounding the second in-game year.
Some of the features and systems already in the game’s Early Access version include, but are not limited to: approximately up to 50 hours of playtime; Steam Deck compatibility; community projects; ranching; wild critter training; quests; multiple difficulty levels and controller support. Released via Steam’s Early Access in July 2025, the game currently has 20 unlockable achievements.
The game even has its own Wiki, as well as a wiki on Fandom. According to the wiki for the player character, known as the Farmer, the character can be one of 10 species and can go by he/him, she/her or they/them pronouns. The player’s species affects their diet, one of their starting skills and certain unlocked cooking recipes at the start of the game.
Players can choose their own name for the Farmer and can pick colors for the Farmer’s fur pattern, tail, eye color, fur (up to 2 colors), shirt, bottoms and hat (does not change the color of the ears).
On the r/CozyGamers subreddit, redditors expressed excitement for the game. On the other hand, others were skeptical due to the game releasing as an Early Access title rather than a full release.
