Ground Zero is the latest in a long list of survival horror videos to make headlines. In this entry by Malformation Games, players will be exploring a post-apocalyptic South Korean landscape. As the name implies, something has gone horribly wrong, and mutated monsters lurk around each corner. The entry is clearly inspired by throwback survival horror legends that really launched the genre into where it is today, especially the retro Resident Evil entries. In a June 7 trailer released during the Future Games Showcase, fans got a deeper look at the old-school gameplay.

Ground Zero Is A Nostalgic Nod To The Retro Survival Horror Classics

There is no questioning where Ground Zero got its survival horror inspiration. In fact, the graphics are pretty much pulled directly from the PlayStation 1 era. The characters utilize a low-poly art style, and the camera angles are all fixed, both highly reminiscent of Resident Evil 2 and 3. The game’s premise is simple: players will enter the South Korean city of Busan a couple of months after a horrifying meteor strike. Besides destroying the city, hideous mutations have also come out to take over the dystopian landscape, indicating a far more sinister secret to discover. Solve puzzles and survive the ruins of Busan and discover the truth.

The official Steam page lays out more about what to expect from the modern, retro-inspired horror Ground Zero. “Fight through post-apocalyptic South Korea in this retro survival horror. Uncover the truth behind the devastating meteor impact that left the country in ruins and turned every living organism into a terrifying monstrosity. Fight. Solve puzzles. Upgrade gear. Make every bullet count.”

Malformation Games highlights some of the key features of Ground Zero.

  • Fight terrifying monsters that lurk in the dark corners of Busan, mutated by the fallout of the impact.

  • Uncover the truth of what really hit Busan that day. What are these strange growths unravelling from the meteor impact, and why has it corrupted what little life remains in the aftermath?

  • Explore a beautiful city in ruins, from shoreline towns and temples to the urban center.

  • Defend yourself with an array of abilities; shoot, stab, kick and counter as an expert soldier trained in firearm and martial combat.

  • Perfect your fighting skills and get rewarded. Cleaner kills means more Genome Points, which can be traded for powerful gear upgrades.

  • Take on huge, terrifying bosses. Seo-Yeon has no idea just how bad the mutations can get in the heart of the city. Be prepared for anything.

  • Relive the spirit of classic Survival Horror. Ground Zero captures the nostalgia of retro horror titles with fixed cameras and pre-rendered backgrounds, puzzles, custom difficulty and optional tank controls.

  • Have fun with unlockables and extra content: Alternate outfits, additional game modes and hidden endings await players curious enough to find them.

Final Thoughts

The South Korean atmospheric setting is intriguing for fans of the genre. Although Ground Zero does not necessarily bring any truly groundbreaking changes, the nostalgic gameplay style should gain plenty of fans and bring enjoyment to players from all different eras. While there is no specific release date for this exciting indie horror, it is expected out for PC soon, and players can wishlist the game on Steam to get updates moving forward.
