Earlier this month, devs and publishers were breathing a sigh a relief when the news of Rockstar’s insanely popular game GTA 6’s release date was pushed back to May 26, 2026. Now, since this game has been, reportedly, in development since 2018 and with Rockstar’s history of delays, we’re honestly not expecting it to be the last delay.

Gamers may be lamenting over the fact that they have to wait another year for the game to drop, but some devs and publishers are breathing sighs of relief. EA’s CEO, Andrew Wilson, states, “We believe that window is clearer than it was before.”

Translation? The big fish is further out, the little fish are now showing more confidence in their own swimming.

But Not Everyone Is Celebrating

That doesn’t mean that all devs are celebrating the GTA 6 delay, especially certain big multiplayer projects; this delay just gave them another problem rather than a boost. One unnamed dev had already delayed its own game launch from Fall 2025 to Spring 2026, because it needed more time in development.

Now? They’re stuck in a gamble. They’ve paid the cost (literally) to delay their—development, time, marketing shifts, and yes, bills still exist—and if Rockstar pushes GTA 6 again, the risk of overlap is still on the table. That means they could end up clashing with Rockstar anyway, despite all avoidance maneuvers.

Delay History And Release Date Jenga

There’s no strict guarantee that Rockstar with stick to their May 26, 2026 release date. Rockstar has a well-documented history of pushing dates back for their games. GTA 5? Publicly delayed once. Red Dead Redemption 2? Bumped from Fall 2017 to Spring 2018, then once more to October 26, 2018.

This isn’t really a hard-and-fast rule that GTA 6 will follow the same track—but it does show Rockstar is willing to write that check and give their big-name games more time if needed. That uncertainty is making launch planning for everyone else a nightmare!

Final Thoughts

Right now, most devs are breathing easy because of the delayed launch of Rockstar’s newest GTA title, since they no longer have to compete with a bigwig. Except Devolver Digital, who is still stalking the socials of GTA 6 like a jilted ex (no shade, Devolver is awesome). We are optimistic that GTA 6 is still on track for its new release date, but don’t make a bet just yet about it being set in stone, given the Rockstar track record.
