Well, it seems like Diablo 4 might be getting a second wind — this time from Nintendo’s next-gen console, the rumored Switch 2. In a recent interview, Blizzard’s Rod Fergusson, the General Manager of the Diablo franchise, said that Diablo 4 is “extremely open” to being launched for the new platform (as long as you allow a few specific criteria).
One of the benefits of having the game on a portable platform is that you can “easily” run it, Fergusson said. “However, the hardware needed for Diablo 4 is going to grow by a lot, and we certainly expect the next-generation Switch will be a very powerful machine when it launches. ” Despite Nintendo not giving out any specific numbers, it appears there will be an enhanced hardware chip in the Switch 2, much larger than the predecessor, so maybe comparable to the PlayStation 4, or indeed, even better.
But there isn’t too much of a choice here from the sheer power. And the biggest concern is the ongoing support for live services. Diablo 4 is unlike almost every game in the series that was released prior to it, and it is built upon a long-standing digital world that constantly evolves. You’ll get regular updates and seasonal content, global events, and you’ll always have service on you in Blizzard’s servers. And just trying to keep up with that level of support on the original Nintendo Switch was already tricky enough, considering how tech-heavy it was back in its days.
Blizzard would need to make sure the Switch 2 can be connected reliably and online in order to enable Diablo 4’s live service mode, says Fergusson. Any problems with that, he adds, could eat into gameplay, including interruptions, lag, or drops in important updates, which would ultimately be bad for the experience.
Beyond the technical issues, bringing Diablo 4 to the Switch 2 would open up new audiences for the game. The original Nintendo Switch was a huge success in terms of attracting millions of users who loved its portability and versatility. If it all works out with Diablo 4 getting to Switch 2, it could bring Sanctuary’s dark, ominous world to a new generation of Nintendo fans.
The move would also be fine for Blizzard, as it follows a bigger plan the studio has in place to keep Diablo 4 in the game for a long time coming. The studio has already made a large investment in making Diablo 4 a living, growing world over the years with its seasonal updates, expansion packs, and live events, and a new platform could really give the player base a boost and help keep the game going for a much longer time.
While no official announcement has been made yet, Fergusson’s comments have sparked excitement and speculation across the gaming community. Many fans are now eagerly awaiting the official reveal of the Switch 2’s capabilities — and hopefully, an announcement confirming Diablo 4’s arrival on the system.
Until then, Diablo 4 players can look forward to continued updates, new seasons, and possibly the chance to slay demons on the go sooner than they think.
