Just when you thought the swamps of Helldivers 2 couldn’t get any more delightful, a new horror has skittered out of the muck. Meet the Dragonroach, the latest nightmare fuel courtesy of Arrowhead Game Studios. If you’ve ever looked at a regular roach and thought, “You know what this needs? Wings and fire,” then congratulations, you’re as twisted as the game designers.

Helldivers 2 Dragonroach

Imagine you’re in the middle of a frantic firefight, desperately trying to reload while a Bile Titan bears down on you. Suddenly, the ground around you erupts in flames, courtesy of a Dragonroach you didn’t even see coming. It adds a whole new layer of tactical panic to the game, forcing you to constantly be aware of not just what’s on the ground, but what’s buzzing above your head. Fun, right?

The Dragonroach is part of the Shrieker family of flying Terminids, but with a spicy twist. They are fire-breathing flying insects that seem personally offended by the concept of democracy. These abominations have been spotted lurking on various Terminid-infested worlds, adding a delightful aerial threat to the usual chaos of dodging Chargers and trying not to get swarmed by Hunters. They hover in the air, spitting gobs of what looks like corrosive fire, turning patches of the battlefield into no-go zones of molten death. So, how do you deal with this flying menace?

Now with unpleasantries out of the way, let’s learn how to turn these fiery pests into bug paste for good. Luckily, despite their intimidating appearance and fiery breath, Dragonroaches aren’t the toughest bugs in the swarm. Their biggest weakness is, well, being a bug. They’re squishy.

The key to taking them down is to hit them with pretty much anything you’ve got. They don’t have the heavy armor of a Charger or the sheer bulk of a Bile Titan. Your standard Liberator assault rifle can do the job, but you’ll burn through ammo quickly as they zip around. It’s like trying to shoot a particularly angry, flammable fly with a machine gun. For a more efficient approach, consider these options:

  • Shotguns: The SG-225 Breaker is a fantastic choice. Its spread makes it easier to hit these fast-moving targets, and a few well-placed shots will bring them down.
  • Marksman Rifles: If you’ve got a steady hand, a weapon like the R-63 Diligence can pick them off from a distance before they even get close enough to roast you.
  • Support Weapons: The Stalwart or the good ol’ Machine Gun can spray a volley of freedom their way, quickly overwhelming them. The Arc Thrower is also effective, zapping them right out of the sky (it’s pretty funny).

The real challenge isn’t their health pool; it’s their mobility and the fact that they rarely travel alone. Where there’s one Dragonroach, there’s probably a whole swarm of them, and dealing with a group requires a bit more firepower and a lot more running (a warbond wouldn’t hurt either)

When a whole cloud of these fiery insects descends upon your squad, individual marksmanship goes out the window. It’s time for crowd control. Your best bet is to use stratagems that can deal with multiple airborne threats at once. The Eagle Airstrike can be tricky to land on flying targets, but if you can catch them while they’re hovering, it’s incredibly satisfying.

However, the real MVP against a Dragonroach swarm might just be the Gatling Sentry. Plop one of those down, and it will go to work, filling the sky with lead and turning the Roach infestation into a rain of chitinous debris. Just be sure to place it somewhere it won’t immediately get melted by their fire.

Final Thoughts: Get Your Fly Swatters Ready

Ultimately, defeating the Dragonroach is all about situational awareness and prioritizing your targets. Keep your head on a swivel, listen for their distinct buzzing, and be ready to light them up before they light you up. Welcome to the new normal, Helldivers. Good luck, and try not to get cooked.
