Genshin Impact is the wildly popular RPG game by Hoyoverse, which was released back in 2020. Its release captured the hearts (and wallets) of millions of people, including myself, and it’s no surprise. The incredible storyline, the beautiful art style, the wild combat, and the most addictive way to collect characters (while also making money for Hoyoverse) catapulted the game to stardom for the first few years since the game’s conception.

Genshin has continuously evolved from where it started in 2020, with over 100 different characters to collect and play with, and an expansive open-world filled with lore and items you can find. Genshin’s success story will be one for the history books; however, a new development for the game was announced last week, though it won’t necessarily change much, depending on what platform you play it on. Here’s what Hoyoverse has announced on their website, and how you may be affected by what’s to come in a couple of days.

Hoyoverse Removes Genshin Impact from PS4

Last week, Hoyoverse announced that it will be removing Genshin Impact completely on the PlayStation 4 servers effective April 8, which is in just a couple of days. The decision comes after Sony announced that they would be winding down on updating PlayStation 4 features after 12 years. PS4 servers aren’t shutting down completely, and some popular games will remain online; however, many upcoming game releases will most likely opt out of PS4 versions of their games.

The bright side is that you’ll still be able to play Genshin on the PS5, which means that you won’t necessarily lose console access altogether. However, this does unfortunately still affect hundreds of thousands of users who still opted to play on the PS4. Here’s the full announcement on the Genshin Impact website addressing the removal of the game on the console, and what to expect in the coming week:

Dear Traveler,

Thank you for your continued support and love for Genshin Impact on PS4®! Due to limitations related to hardware performance and platform application size, we will be discontinuing support and updates for Genshin Impact on PS4® in future versions.

Genshin Impact on PS5® will continue to operate normally and is not affected by the removal and update discontinuation on PS4®. Traveler will still be able to enjoy the latest content updates on PS5® and other supported platforms.

The removal and discontinuation plan for Genshin Impact on PS4® will be carried out in three phases: Game Removal, In-Game Purchases Delisting, and End of Update Support. Please see the detailed schedule below.

〓Game Removal (PS4®)〓

Starting from 09/10/2025 06:00 (UTC+8), Genshin Impact on PS4® will be removed from the PlayStation®Store. After this date, accounts of PlayStation™Network that have never downloaded Genshin Impact on PS4® will no longer be able to search for or download it via the PlayStation®Store.

Accounts of PlayStation™Network that have previously downloaded Genshin Impact can still re-download it at any time via [Store > Library], even if the game is deleted from the device.

Until the in-game purchases on PS4® are delisted, top-ups and purchases will still be available through both the PlayStation®Store and the in-game shop.

All Travelers can continue to log in to the game and receive update patches on PS4® until the update support ends.

〓In-Game Purchases Delisting (PS4®)〓

Starting from 02/25/2026 06:00 (UTC+8), all in-game purchases for Genshin Impact on PS4® will be removed from both the PlayStation®Store and the in-game shop.

Before Genshin Impact’s update discontinuation on PS4®, any items purchased from the PlayStation®Store but not yet claimed in-game can still be obtained by logging into Genshin Impact on PS4®.

〓End of Update Support (PS4®)〓

Starting from 04/08/2026 06:00 (UTC+8), we will officially cease all update support for Genshin Impact on PS4®. Traveler will no longer be able to log in to the game on PS4®.

Installations of the game on PS4® will stop receiving update patches.

Any items purchased from the PlayStation® Store but not yet claimed in-game can only be claimed by logging into Genshin Impact on PS5® after this date.

〓Binding Other Login Methods〓

After logging in via PS4® or PS5®, Travelers can bind other login methods by navigating to: Paimon Menu > Settings > Account > User Center.

Starting from 12/17/2025 12:00 (UTC+8), when you open Genshin Impact on PS4® (even if it is an old version of the game that cannot be updated due to update discontinuation), a binding prompt will appear periodically on the game interface.

Genshin Impact Remains Popular Even After 6 Years

Even after 6 years, Genshin remains incredibly popular today. The hype for the game has definitely slowed down. I remember playing this game every single day, grinding materials and resources, and even spending money on the game. And it wasn’t occasionally. Hoyoverse cracked the code in online gacha games, getting tens of millions of users to spend money on the game consistently. COVID certainly helped boost the game’s momentum as well.

It definitely feels like many people have moved on from the game; however, the community is still growing and pretty active, even today. With the game still hitting over 3 million daily users, an average of around 18 million monthly users, and generating hundreds of millions of dollars per update, Genshin is not slowing down at all. Last year, Genshin generated over 800 million dollars, which is over a 12% increase in revenue from 2024, earning over 710 million dollars. That doesn’t sound like much, but a game generating that much money and seeing an increase in just a year is a testament to how popular Genshin is even after 6 years, and counting.
