Cult of the Lamb, the (ahem) cult favorite indie adventure game, has been shown a lot of love post-launch with both DLC packs and free updates. Recently, developer Massive Monster and publisher Devolver Digital announced what should be the game’s biggest DLC pack yet, Woolhaven. In fact, the pack is reportedly so massive, that it rivals the length of the base game.
According to Woolhaven‘s Steam page, the DLC pack will give players a whole new adventure when they almost complete the base game. You will discover a new realm, Woolhaven, and you’ll have to ensure that your cult can survive the harsh winter. There will also be new features such as animal breeding and raising (even though, you know, the characters in the game are also animals). It looks like it could almost qualify as a complete sequel to the original game, which makes one wonder why the developers didn’t expand it into a full sequel.
A post on the official Cult of the Lamb TikTok account asks why a game company would make a DLC almost as long as the base game. The answer? “I don’t know, I think we flew a little close to the sun here. We tend to go all out, be at weddings, to raves, to three free massive content updates. This DLC is not free, but I promise you’ll love it.” Of course, some players are questioning the DLC not being free, but another post said that “Woolhaven is so much more than any of these updates. It almost doubles the gameplay from the original release.”
If the Woolhaven DLC is really as massive as the advertising states, then it’s reasonable for it to not be free. However, I’m wondering why Massive Monster doesn’t just go all out and expand Woolhaven into a full-fledged sequel. There wouldn’t be grumbling among the fans about having to pay for a sequel, and fans have been wanting a sequel anyway. Since you have to almost finish Cult of the Lamb in order to access Woolhaven‘s content anyway, it seems that the sequel route would be the smart way to go.
