Hollow Knight: Silksong has arrived on the scene, and it’s huge. It’s not only huge because of how everyone is talking about it, but it is also huge in its content. While it’s safe to say that very few (if any) people have actually beaten the game at this point, the list of achievements indicates that Silksong is a massive game, more massive than the original.
According to the original Hollow Knight‘s Steam page, the game has sixty-three achievements, while Silksong‘s Steam page only lists fifty-two achievements. At first glance, this may seem to suggest that the sequel is smaller than the original game. However, we must consider more than just the mere number of achievements. The types of achievements should also be considered. As GamesRadar points out, the original game had “three speedrunning-based achievements: one for completing the game in under 10 hours, another for under 5 hours, and the big one – completing 100% in under 20 hours.”
The sequel has its own 100% speedrun achievement, but instead of the cap being twenty hours, this cap is thirty hours. This indicates that it would be unreasonable to assume that people could 100% the game in twenty hours, meaning that the game is probably much longer than Hollow Knight, possibly as much as 50% longer.
Of course, a longer game won’t discourage speedrunners from trying to smash the 100% mark in under twenty hours. Given that there is also an achievement to complete the game (but not 100% it) in five hours, there will probably be plenty of Silksong speedrunners on YouTube soon. However, the more casual gamer must wonder how long it takes to complete the game without worrying about speed. According to How Long to Beat, the original Hollow Knight takes around twenty-seven hours to beat. This could mean that Silksong will take thirty-five or forty hours.
No matter how long it takes to beat, Silksong looks to be as beautiful and mysterious as the original Hollow Knight. With a $19.99 price tag for a possible thirty to forty hours to beat (longer to 100%), you will definitely get your money’s worth. However, don’t let achievement-hunting prevent you from just sitting back and enjoying the lovely atmosphere.
