The episodic adventure game Life is Strange has garnered a massive fan base over the years due to its immersive storytelling. For fans of the series, a live-action television series has been officially greenlit at Amazon Prime Video. Moreover, this project adapts the popular narrative-driven video game franchise for a streaming audience. How will this beloved story translate to a new medium?
Charlie Covell, who also takes the role of executive producer and showrunner, ultimately wrote the Life is Strange series. Specifically, Dmitri M. Johnson, Mike Goldberg, and Timothy I. Stevenson will handle this executive production under their Story Kitchen banner. Furthermore, Amazon MGM Studios produces the series, with collaborative efforts from Square Enix, Story Kitchen, and LuckyChap.
Particularly, Story Kitchen has shared its long-standing belief that Life is Strange represents a cultural touchstone deserving of this adaptation. Ultimately, the company expressed honor in finally bringing this story to life alongside their partners after a decade-long journey. According to the official logline, the plot will follow Max, a photography student who discovers an ability to rewind time after saving her childhood best friend, Chloe.
At the same time that Max struggles to comprehend this new power, the two friends investigate the mysterious disappearance of a fellow student. During the investigation, they’ll uncover a dark side to their town, ultimately forcing them to make an impossible life-or-death choice with permanent consequences. Covell also believes that it’s an honor to adapt Life is Strange, expressing great excitement to share Max and Chloe’s story with both dedicated players and new audiences.
The first Life Is Strange game launched to critical acclaim and numerous awards in 2015. While the game reached over twenty million players by 2023, it spawned several sequels and standalone titles, including Before the Storm, Life Is Strange 2, True Colors, and the recent Double Exposure. Meanwhile, Covell was praised by the production company LuckyChap as a visionary and an exceptional steward of revered intellectual property.
Alongside the producer, the company looks forward to bringing the world of Arcadia Bay to life, excitingly teaming up with Amazon, MGM Studios, Story Kitchen, and Square Enix. For nearly a decade, this television adaptation has been in various stages of development, with Legendary Television originally attached and Johnson involved from the beginning.
This Amazon order marks the first time the Life is Strange series has been formally commissioned as a series. Notably, Square Enix studio heads Jon Brooke and Lee Singleton have long been asked about a television show. They are both pleased to partner with a studio they trust to do the universe justice. To clarify, Covell may be the right person for the job of bringing this game to television.
The producer is best known for his work writing the Netflix adaptation of The End of the F***ing World, and more recently, the creation of Netflix drama Kaos. Given the Life Is Strange series, Prime Video continues its growing line of game adaptations. The live adaptation joins the upcoming Tomb Raider series from Story Kitchen and the already successful Fallout television show, which has been renewed for a second and third season.
