The keystone event for the professional League of Legends is the World Championship. The event returns to China for the first time since COVID-19 this year. Today, LoL Esports announced the dates and venues for Worlds 2025. Teams will travel to three different arenas during the event, covering some of the biggest venues in China for Esports Events. Only one team has qualified for the event so far, with many regions yet to return to play.
Play-In and Swiss Stages
The Play-In (which will see the fourth seeds from the LCK and LPL battle) and the Swiss Stage take place at the Beijing Smart Esports Center. The Play-Ins Best of Five series will take place on October 14th to determine which team will qualify for the Swiss Stage. From there, the sixteen teams battle it out to move on to the Bracket Stage. The Swiss Stage begins the day after the Play-In and ends on October 25th.
Bracket Stage
Eight teams from the Swiss Stage progress to the Bracket Stage. The Mercedes-Benz Arena in Shanghai will host the quarter-final and semi-final matches. Differently this year, there is no break between the two rounds. The first quarter-final takes place on October 28th. All matches will run consecutively until November 2nd.
Only two teams will face off at the Dong’an Lake Sports Park Multifunctional Gymnasium in Chengdu to find out which is the best team in the world. One final Best of Five to decide it all and lift the Summoner’s Cup.
For the past two MSIs, the winners have earned themselves a spot at the World Championship. The only catch is that they must qualify for their region’s playoff stage. This year, the LCK adopted a new format, which meant teams kept their records from before MSI. GenG went undefeated with an 18-0 series score. Coming into the return of the LCK, all they needed was one series victory to clinch playoffs, and by extension, a place in the World Championship. They won their first series 2-0 against Hanwha Life Esports. GenG must continue to perform to increase the seeding at Worlds.
