Luto has been lurking for years, as Selecta Play and Broken Bird Games have worked to perfect the upcoming psychological thriller. The haunting storyline is based around ghosts, secrets, and ultimately, hope, something that is not always common in the horror genre, and has been anticipated since the first reveal four years ago. Finally, the team dropped a release date trailer at the Future Games Showcase on June 7, and it is actually just around the corner. It will start out as digital, but a special edition physical copy will also be available later in the year.
Luto is a psychological horror thriller where the setting is your own home, once a place of safety, and now your own personal jail cell. The protagonist is devastated by loss and the associated trauma that comes from that loss, which is what has trapped them. To explore anxiety and depression is a major statement in 2025, especially following Mental Health Awareness Month. How does trauma affect the human brain and human spirit, and the multiple phobias that manifest and magnify as a result of feeling alone? That is the key behind the fascinating horror game.
The official Steam page for Luto describes the game as “a psychological horror experience where you take on the role of someone unable to leave their home. Every attempt to escape will lead you deeper into the unknown, where nothing is as it seems and everything will test your senses.” As the development team highlights, the prominent theme is death. They highlight specific features of the game that will challenge the core of what you believe to be true.
What lies behind loss: feel the void left by the absence of a loved one, where despair grows, fed by anxiety and depression. Day after day…
Between reality and fiction: delve into an enigmatic place and explore its labyrinthine paths full of secrets. The truth has many faces, and you might not like the one you find.
Will not let you go: experience unsettling terror that envelops your senses, with fears lurking around every corner. Darkness does not only dwell in shadows.
Never.

I love that Luto is tackling mental health and phobias in a way that is both haunting, immersive, and believable, all well entering something entirely surreal and horrifying. The clever premise for this indie horror is something that is well worth the wait. Luto will launch on July 22 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC, and a Special Edition physical copy will launch specifically for the PlayStation 5, although an exact release date for that version has not been confirmed.
