Magical Diary Wolf Hall: A Superior Sequel with Expanded Magic – Weekly Indie Spotlight

Magical Diary Wolf Hall is a very worthy sequel to the visual novel Magical Diary Horse Hall, although “sequel” is a bit of a misleading term. Instead of being a direct sequel, you now play a new character attending the same magic school during the same school year you played through in the first game, in an alternate universe where your character from the first game isn’t there. This allows the player to gain a new perspective and a deeper understanding of the worldbuilding.

Magical Diary Wolf Hall: More of Everything

Dveloped by Hanako Games, Magical Diary Wolf Hall expands on everything that made the original game great, adding new features and further fleshing out the world. You have five “main” possible love interests, but there are also seven “secondary” love interests, making for plenty of replayability. This game also introduces a personality feature, meaning that your choices will affect your character’s main personality traits. There are new options that weren’t available in the first game, such as the ability to join the school’s chorus and nature club.

The dungeon exams are also more complex this time around. As in the first game, there are multiple possible solutions depending on which spells you have learned, but the exams are longer and involve more spell casting. Some of them can really give your brain a good exercise, letting you feel the tension that your character experiences.

Expanded Lore

Wolf Hall lets us learn more about the world created in the first game. In the last game, your character was a “wildseed,” meaning that she was born to non-magical parents. This time, your character is a born wizard. Since your character is already familiar with the magical world, that gives the game the chance to give you a look at the world through a more nuanced lens. There is also a new codex that you can look up whenever you forget a detail about the world. The world feels more fleshed out now, with new species, new character secrets, and new information about how magic works.

Conclusion

If you enjoy the first Magical Diary game, you should definitely check out Magical Diary Wolf Hall. Even if you haven’t played the first game, this game is still well worth a play for any fan of visual novels or magical schools (and really, who doesn’t love magical schools?). The Magical Diary world has become even more enchanting with this Magical Diary Wolf Hall. The game can be purchased on Steam for $24.99.
