Bungie’s Marathon is still deep in the testing trenches, but that hasn’t stopped the leaks from pouring out like someone left the anomaly containment unit unlocked. Despite NDAs and DMCA takedowns flying like confetti, players are talking—and what they’re saying paints a picture of a game that’s evolving fast, maybe even salvaging its early missteps.
First up: the UI. It’s been overhauled, and the faction screen now actually feels like it belongs in a game that wants you to care about lore. All six core factions are playable in the current test, each with a cinematic intro that drops just enough backstory to make you wonder who’s lying and who’s just really into neon armor.
The visual overhaul is real. Factions look sharper, more distinct, and less like placeholder assets from a sci-fi asset pack. It’s clear Bungie’s trying to inject personality into the social extraction shooter formula—and honestly, it’s about time.
The leaks also introduced a new runner named Icon. If Pathfinder from Apex Legends and a loot goblin had a baby, it’d be this guy. Icon comes equipped with a drone that auto-loots enemies, which is either brilliant or broken depending on how sweaty the meta gets. Either way, it’s a clear signal that Bungie’s leaning into utility-based playstyles and giving players more ways to survive without face-tanking every encounter.
One of the leaked maps features a hazard zone with burning sparks raining from the sky—because nothing says “welcome to the future” like environmental trauma. Another map is set aboard the UESC Marathon starship, marking the first time players get to explore the game’s namesake in playable form. It’s a nice touch, assuming the ship doesn’t immediately try to kill you.
The current playtest is supposed to run for a month, some reports say, and Bungie’s asking players to log at least one hour per day (get them daily check-ins or suffer corporate wrath!). If they stick with it, they’ll earn a $500 reward—which is either generous or suspiciously desperate, depending on how you interpret Bungie’s recent morale nosedive.
Bottom line: Marathon is still finding its footing, but the leaks suggest Bungie’s making real moves to flesh out the world, diversify gameplay, and give players something worth extracting. Whether it all holds together remains to be seen—but for now, the whispers from inside the NDA vault are sounding a lot more promising than they did a few months ago
