Gamers, the wait has been long (and I mean long), but it seems like we finally have something solid to hold onto. Nintendo has re-re-re-confirmed that Metroid Prime 4 is still on track for a release in 2025. Yes, you read that right. It’s actually happening. And no, it’s not being pushed to 2026. For now, anyway.
For a game that was first teased in 2017 (yes, pre-pandemic times when “remote work” wasn’t even a buzzword yet), fans have been enduring a rollercoaster ride of emotions. Remember the 2019 reboot news? That moment when Nintendo casually mentioned they were restarting development? Yeah, that wasn’t exactly what Metroid fans wanted to hear after years of radio silence. But here we are, marching into 2025, fueled by cautious optimism and the promise of exploring uncharted corners of the galaxy with Samus once more.
Nintendo hasn’t been spilling too many beans about what’s in store. No big spoilers, no gameplay features plastered all over the internet. But what we do know is… juicy. Here are the highlights:
Nintendo’s statement at this event? “Metroid Prime 4 will be ‘available later in 2025.’” Fingers crossed “later” doesn’t mean the dead of December when we’re already knee-deep in next year’s release lists. But hey, at least it’s not some “TBD” situation anymore.
If you’ve been clutching your Metroid-laden GameCube controller, staring off into the void, you’re far from alone. Fans have been piecing together crumbs of information like detectives on a space noir case.
The original announcement during E3 2017 stirred hype into a frenzy. A crisp logo, some spacey graphics, but not much else. We were hopeful. Then came 2019, and Nintendo dropped a meteor-sized bombshell that development was being scrapped and restarted. Fun times. They then handed the baton to Retro Studios, the team behind the beloved Metroid Prime Trilogy, which was the best news we’d had in ages. Since then? Crickets… mostly.
Nintendo’s slow-drip updates have felt like they’re intentionally testing our patience. But one thing’s for sure—with over seven years in the oven, Prime 4 has the potential to be, dare I say, legendary. Retro Studios has already proven they have the chops. Add advanced hardware (Switch 2 be boasting) and the promise of some intense narrative innovation, and we might just have something that’s worth the endless memes of “Where’s Metroid Prime 4?”
It seems like Nintendo is ramping up big things for 2025. Not just Metroid Prime 4, but a slate of other blockbusters (Borderlands 4, Hades 2, Elden Ring’s…something). Make no mistakes here people, Prime 4 is the crown jewel that fans have been desperately clinging to, to relive the glory days of engaging puzzles, eerie space exploration, and heart-racing boss battles (my fingers are cramping just thinking about it)!
The question on everyone’s mind is whether Nintendo delivers something that doesn’t just live up to the hype but exceeds it. Seven years is a lot of buildup, and anything shy of groundbreaking is going to feel like a galactic-sized misfire. No pressure, Nintendo. (crosses fingers behind back)
If you happen to call Toronto home or plan on popping by for the event, lucky you! Fan Expo Canada will be the first major opportunity for fans to get their hands on a playable demo of Metroid Prime 4. According to Nintendo’s blog, attendees can explore upcoming Switch 2 titles alongside existing ones like Mario Kart World and Street Fighter 6.
And yes, the mention of Switch 2 titles feels intentional. While Prime 4 will likely still launch on the OG Switch, there’s little doubt it’s primed (pun absolutely intended) to be a showpiece for what the next-gen hardware can do.
We’ve waited this long, so what’s another few months, you ask? Sure, but this isn’t just any game. Metroid Prime as a series is a genre-defining benchmark for first-person adventure games. Anything less than perfection after seven-plus years is going to feel… complicated, to say the least.
But maybe, just maybe, 2025 is Samus’s year. Perhaps this is when the franchise secures its rightful seat at gaming’s elite table once and for all. Until then, prep those Joy-Cons, search eBay for that Trilogy bundle, and keep one eye on the calendar.
Metroid Prime 4 is coming, folks. And this time, they (probably) won’t make us wait until 2050…right?
