Get ready to put some serious swagger in your slash. This month, developer Amber dropped the first-ever demo for Mexican Ninja, a gloriously over-the-top 2.5D roguelike beat ’em up that’s as fast and crass as it sounds. If you’ve ever thought, “You know what Streets of Rage needed? More donkeys and bilingual slang,” then this might just be your game of the year.
Players are thrown into the chaotic, stylized streets of Nuevo Tokyo, a bizarre and brilliant mashup of Mexican grit and Japanese cyberpunk. It’s a world where Narcos and the Yakuza decided to join forces, creating the wonderfully corrupt “Narkuzas.” Your job? Lead the uprising and slice your way through them all, preferably with as much style as possible.
Mexican Ninja is designed to be a pick-up-and-play arcade brawler that still rewards those who take the time to master its systems. Think less mindless button-mashing and more of a beautiful, bloody ballet. With randomized runs, every attempt to liberate Nuevo Tokyo will feel fresh. You’ll need sharp timing, perfect spacing, and a smart build to survive the loud, trash-talking duels.
The game’s progression system is where things get truly, wonderfully weird. You can unlock different Spirit Animal paths and unleash devastating “Mexican Jutsus” on your foes. But the real star of the show is the skill tree, cheekily named the “Way of the Donkey.” It’s a swagger-first system that transforms your solid fighting fundamentals into something utterly ridiculous and powerful. Because of course it is.
Dario Hoyo, the Creative Director at Amber, perfectly captured the game’s chaotic energy: “Mexican Ninja was born from our love of old-school beat ’em ups, then layered with the replayable bite of roguelikes. It’s Mexico meeting Japan: lucha bravado, bilingual slang, and irreverence colliding with feudal drama and Yakuza steel.” He added, “We built combat to feel fast, satisfying, and skill-based, and we let the comedy live inside the fight… keep you on your toes, then make you grin with style, swagger, and huevos.”
The demo, available right now on Steam, throws you headfirst into the spark of the rebellion. You’ll get a taste of the game’s core combat with quick, punchy encounters and enough story to set the stage for the full-blown revolt. It’s the perfect appetizer for the main course, giving you a feel for the fast-paced action and the sharp-tongued enemies you’ll be dicing up.
Some key features to look forward to are:
The demo is out now on Steam, with the full game slated for a PC release in Spring 2026. So go on, master the Way of the Donkey. It’s time to show the Narkuzas what a Mexican Ninja can do.
