Minecraft 1.21 has finally been released, and while it’s a great update with plenty of fun adventures in store, it’s not going to stop us from speculating on what the next one might look like. Minecraft’s development cycle never ends and it’s only a matter of time until Mojang is ready to show off their ideas for the 1.22 update.
Before Mojang has their say though, we have our own ideas for big features that would be huge deals if they were added to Minecraft in the future.
This has been a demand of fans for a long time, and one we know Mojang are actively working on. The combat system in Minecraft isn’t the best. While Bedrock Edition still uses the classic click-spamming method, Java Edition has a hybrid system that the majority of fans do not enjoy. Java Edition 1.9 changed combat so that strikes have a cooldown that affects the amount of damage you do, but it wasn’t received well by fans.
This system is still in Java Edition, and Mojang has spent years testing new combat systems in beta, so it would be good to finally have something finished added to the game. It would both fix Java Edition’s combat and finally give Bedrock Edition combat its first major update.
Mojang may have already said on several occasions that they won’t add Vertical Slabs, and they’ve even explained why, but that hasn’t stopped fans from demanding them all these years, and we’re on their side. Such a seemingly small feature would cause such rejoicing among fans that it would likely undo all the years of bad will that has built up over various design choices Mojang has made.
Making Minecraft worlds more varied is always a good thing. The last few updates have added a couple of new biomes like Mangrove Swamps and Cherry Forests, both of which are beautiful additions to the game. On top of that they’ve come with new wood types, which is always a welcome addition for builders. A bunch of new biomes like proper Beaches with Palm Trees would make exploring Minecraft all the more rewarding.
Whenever Minecraft adds a new mob in the modern era, they’re always an interesting idea with complex behaviors. It doesn’t have to be anything super special, but they always have some extra features about them, like how goats headbutt nearby mobs or armadillos curl up if threats get too close. By comparison, it makes the oldest mobs like pigs and cows – which just wander around aimlessly – quite boring. The same goes for hostile mobs, it would be nice if zombies did a little more than just walk directly towards you until they’re close enough to hit you. The game’s oldest mobs could do with some new behaviors.
Some may argue that three dimensions are enough for Minecraft, but there will always be a sizable group of players who are raring for bigger and better adventures, and a new dimension would be the ultimate prize for those players. A sky dimension similar to the Aether mod is always a possibility, but also, with the giant portal-like structure in Ancient Cities, a strange Skulk dimension is also on the cards.
Even if a whole dimension is too much to ask, a new boss to fight would be appreciated, as it’s been a long time since one was last added. You could argue the Warden is a bit like a boss, but since that mob was specifically designed to be unkillable, it doesn’t drop anything, so there’s no point in fighting it.
An actual challenging boss fight would be a fun experience, especially if it came alongside a new combat update. The Deep Dark could easily add another powerful enemy, or they could spawn in a rare room that has a chance to spawn in Trial Chambers.
The annual mob vote has become extremely toxic over the last few years, with fans consistently railing against the idea that Mojang will only develop one of the three fun ideas they present to us. While the debate will no doubt rage on for a while there, dedicating an update to adding all the rejects from previous years would certainly go a long way to mending those fences with fans, while giving us lots of cool new mobs in the process.
It’s not the most flashy of features, but it would be a godsend. Just one simple “sort” button is all we ask for. It would make organizing both our inventory and our chests so much nicer if we could do it with a single click.
This doesn’t necessarily mean making changes to the actual farming mechanics, but right now Minecraft farms are in the “set it and forget it” territory. You gather all the different crops you can grow, give them a space to do so, and then generally everyone just leaves it – even more so if you’ve set up a redstone contraption to automate gathering. Giving us more of a reason to tend to our crops, turn them into better recipes, or even just a few more crops to begin with would make that side of the game a lot more engaging.
If you were to poll Minecraft fans on what update they’d want added to the game right now, this would almost certainly be the number one answer. 1.16’s Nether update turned the Nether from a dull wasteland into a place teeming with life, full of exciting biomes and structures to explore. 1.18 made the much-needed changes to caves and terrain generation in the game, which means that the only dimension still in need of a major overhaul is The End.
Currently, there isn’t much reason to visit The End more than once. All you need to do is kill the Dragon, then find a quick End City to grab an Elytra and some Shulker Shells – that’s it. If The End could be filled with weird new biomes with new mystical mobs and maybe even a structure or two, it would make it the most fascinating place to visit in the entire game.

The New York Yankees have made their 2025 goals abundantly clear: They're trying to return to the World Series and win it all. In an effort to do so, the Pinstripes traded pitcher Nestor Cortes and infielder Caleb Durbin to the Milwaukee Brewers this season, adding closer Devin Williams to the roster. Halfway into the season, it looks like that was a big mistake. The Yankees are now looking to fill gaps in the both the bullpen and the infield before the MLB trade deadline rolls around at the end of the month. Utilityman Oswaldo Cabrera was great at third base, but suffered a potentially season-ending injury in May. The Yankees tried to compensate by shifting Jazz Chisholm Jr. to third, but it was clear Chisholm excels at second, and he's since been moved back. Durbin, on the other hand, has only gotten better in Milwaukee. "Over 75 games this season, Durbin is slashing .265/.350/.382 with five homers and elite contact skills at the plate," Alexander Wilson of Empire Sports Media wrote. "He ranks in the 95th percentile in whiff rate and 98th in strikeout rate — rare company for a young infielder. Durbin’s advanced plate discipline would’ve been invaluable in a Yankees lineup that too often leans on boom-or-bust approaches." Then there's Devin Williams, who has been part of a shaky-at-best Yankees bullpen. He has certainly seen improvement since the beginning of the season, when he was pulled from closing duties after a blown save to the Yankees' division rival Toronto Blue Jays. However, it hasn't been quite enough. Toronto swept New York in a four game series earlier this month, securing their lead of the AL east over the Pinstripes. Williams pitched the final inning, giving up two earned runs. He has a 4.82 ERA over 37.1 innings pitched in 41 games. Williams keeps improving, and hopefully will prove that the Yankees made the right choice by acquiring him. However, that still doesn't fill the gaping hole New York has at third base, and they're likely missing Durbin's consistent abilities in the field and at the plate. The Yankees have until the July 31 MLB trade deadline to make any trades to address these issues. The Green Bay Packers released star cornerback Jaire Alexander earlier this offseason, which frustrated the fan base because they did so without an obvious solution. Packers fans have been clamoring for the team to sign veteran and former Defensive Player of the Year Stephon Gilmore, but Green Bay does not appear all that interested in doing so. But you know who could represent a possible replacement for Alexander? Wide receiver Bo Melton. Yes, you read that right: wide receiver Bo Melton. Melton has started Packers training camp as a cornerback, which could ultimately lead to the 26-year-old assuming a major role in Green Bay’s secondary. Why the position switch? Well, Melton was struggling finding playing time in the Packers’ receiving corps as it was. Now, Green Bay added Matthew Golden and Savon Williams into the equation, so the chances of him actually getting on the field as a receiver in 2025 are slim to none. Melton logged just eight catches for 91 yards last season, and in 2024, he finished with 16 receptions for 218 yards and a touchdown. The funny thing is, he actually has shown promise in very limited action, but there is simply no room for him. The Rutgers product seems to want to stay in Green Bay, hence his decision to flip to the other side of the ball. He knows he has no chance to play as a wide out. Why not utilize his athleticism as a cornerback? Of course, this does not necessarily mean that Melton will serve as Alexander’s primary replacement. In fact, it would be pretty concerning if the Packers choose not to bring in another corner between now and the start of the regular season. But hey, maybe Melton will be so impressive in camp that Green Bay will actually give him a look.
Only a week away from the July 31 MLB trade deadline, teams are starting to determine if they are going to be buyers or sellers over the next seven days. Despite a messy playoff picture, there are a few teams that have to buy at the deadline and capitalize on the season they are having. Here are four teams that should be buyers in 2025. San Francisco Giants (54-49) After already making a big splash when they acquired designated hitter Rafael Devers earlier this season, the Giants are a team that needs to go all in at the deadline. Currently six games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West and one-and-a-half games out of a wild-card spot, the Giants have a team that could be a problem to face in a playoff series. Acquiring another piece to the rotation to pair with starters Logan Webb and Robbie Ray should be the main focus, while adding another solid bat to the mix would give them one of the deepest teams in the league. Positions of need: Starting pitcher, second base and a fourth outfielder. Philadelphia Phillies (58-44) Looking to make their fourth-straight postseason appearance, the Phillies have one of the best rotations in baseball and a potent lineup, but still have weaknesses that need to be addressed. With designated hitter Kyle Schwarber, first baseman Bryce Harper and pitcher Zack Wheeler all continuing to age, the Phillies are a team that needs to make a splash at the deadline if they want to be considered a threat in the postseason. While the top of the lineup is set, the Phillies desperately need to find production at the bottom of the lineup. With their outfielders struggling and a bullpen that is among the worst in baseball, the Phillies will look to make some additions as they prepare for another long run in the postseason. Positions of need: Relief pitchers, center field and left field. Boston Red Sox (55-49) Not expected to be in this position after trading their star player away mid-season, the Red Sox find themselves in the middle of the playoff picture and should be looking to capitalize on their strong play. Home to one of the best bullpens in the league and a lineup that is a mix of young talent and veteran hitters, the one thing the Red Sox lineup is lacking is a true power bat that can put fear in opposing pitchers. With one of baseball's best pitchers in Garrett Crochet leading the rotation, the Red Sox desperately need to find him some help at the deadline. Positions of need: Starting pitchers and a power bat Seattle Mariners (54-48) With what can be considered the deepest rotation in baseball and a potential 2025 American League Most Valuable Player in catcher Cal Raleigh, the Mariners head into the trade deadline needing to be buyers to take advantage of their first-half success. While the bullpen isn't a glaring issue, adding another left-hander to pair with Gabe Speier would be a big boost to their late-game situations. Adding bats to the lineup should be the main focus for the Mariners. With the production they have received at third base and right field amongst the worst in baseball, upgrading those spots could give the Mariners a team capable of making the postseason for just the second time in the last 24 years. Positions of need: Left-handed relief pitching, third base and right field.
Tottenham Hotspur are focused on signing Morgan Gibbs-White from Nottingham Forest, despite the delays. According to TBR Football, Manchester City were interested in signing the 25-year-old midfielder as well, but he has already informed them that he wishes to join Tottenham instead. Manchester City have now moved on to other targets. The development will come as a huge boost for Tottenham. It will be interesting to see if they can convince Nottingham Forest to get the deal across the line now. The midfielder was excellent for Nottingham Forest last season, scoring seven goals and picking up 10 assists in the Premier League. He could prove to be a useful acquisition for Tottenham, who need more creativity and technical ability in the final third. Tottenham need Morgan Gibbs-White Tottenham need to improve their squad if they want to do well in the league and the Champions League next season. Signing talented players like Gibbs-White will help them match up to elite clubs. The 25-year-old is capable of slotting into multiple midfield roles, and he will add goals and creativity to the side. James Maddison can be quite inconsistent at times, and Tottenham need more depth in that area of the pitch. Having another top-quality creator would be ideal. Can Spurs convince Nottingham Forest? Initially, there were rumours that Tottenham were prepared to trigger the £60 million exit clause in his contract, but Nottingham Forest are unhappy with the leak of the confidential information regarding his clause, and they are planning legal action against the north London club. It will be interesting to see if the two clubs can work out their differences and finalise the transfer. The player is keen for the move to go through, and Nottingham Forest will not want to hold onto an unhappy player.
