Turn-based RPGs are a classic subgenre of the Role Playing genre of games, where the difficulty can range from mind-numbingly easy to “Dear God, why did that crit!?” Turn-based RPGs, especially in the indie space, have innovative storytelling – like Octopath Traveler – or a standout gameplay system – like Darkest Dungeon. The following games are in order of the earliest to the latest release date. Add them to your wishlist, if you’re able.
Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake is one of the first Dragon Quest games released since Akira Toriyama’s death in April 2024. Toriyama was the character designer for the series. This game will come out simultaneously with Atelier Ryza 2: Lost Legends & the Secret Fairy DX and Atelier Ryza 3: Alchemist of the End & the Secret Key DX. If you’re into Dungeons & Dragons but aren’t keen on meeting people in real life or online for DnD sessions, this game is for you. This game is developed in collaboration with Wizards of the Coast, the company behind Dungeons and Dragons, making it an official product. So far, this game will be exclusive to Steam. This game is expected to be a great turn-based RPG.
Personally, I am not a fan of prequel stories of established franchises. In Octopath Traveler 0, you can create a character and experience the game’s universe prior to the events of the first two games. Expect this game on all major platforms. This game will make a great early Christmas gift for turn-based RPG fans.
Abyss Fantasia is a hand-drawn turn-based RPG that is expected to come out this year on Steam. In this game, you play as a young girl who sets out to solve the mystery involving the Abyss. If you love hand-drawn graphics, Abyss Fantasia is for you.
This game is a sci-fi turn-based strategy RPG, developed and published by KatHawk Studios. In this game, you play as a young emperor trying their best to save a dying Empire. Fans of Sid Meyer’s Civilization franchise might fancy this game for its political system and managing crucial resources and alliances.
The end of this year is looking bright for turn-based RPGs. I hope these games bring you joy, and I hope you’re able to share that experience with others. If you enjoyed this content, be sure to check out other articles on this site.
