An iconic piece of Mario art is being showcased at The Shops at Columbus Circle in New York City.
Many millennials will recognize it at first glance from any video that pops up about it. But in case you are not aware, the Princess Peach stained-glass image was featured in the fan-favorite game Super Mario 64. Yep, that beautiful stained glass we saw in Mario 64 is now a real-life, full-size window inside a shopping center that fans can visit daily until the installation packs up.
The display opened on March 10, with March 15 serving as the final day to see it. Hours of operation are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. The installation features a massive illuminated mural designed to look like stained glass, along with a Princess Peach throne for photo opportunities.
So why is there a Princess Peach stained-glass-looking mural at The Shops at Columbus Circle in New York City?
It is part of a marketing campaign for the “Super Mario Galaxy” movie, which is being promoted heavily right now. But that is probably not the main reason so many fans are geeking out over it.
For longtime Mario fans, this is much more than a promotional display. It is a real-world replica of the stained-glass window seen in Peach’s Castle in Super Mario 64. When players walked up to the castle and entered it, the image was right there, impossible to miss. It showed Peach with her hands clasped in front of her, looking upward and surrounded by colorful flowers.
If you loved that game, there is a good chance you stood there staring at that window for at least a few minutes before continuing.
That image was not just background decoration either. It connected to one of the game’s memorable secrets.
After obtaining one Power Star, players could access another stained-glass-related image inside Peach’s Castle. Heading to the upper floor and jumping into the Princess Peach painting led to the secret slide. That painting recreated the stained-glass image seen near the front of the castle, making the connection between the two visuals feel very intentional.
For some players, that slide became an instant favorite. It had just enough challenge to make it exciting. There were no walls along the sides, so it was very easy to fall off, but it was still simple enough to complete if you stayed focused. Finish the slide, and you earn one of your Power Stars.
This whole display also shows how interconnected game assets can be.
If you were not paying attention to the stained glass, you might not have cared much about the painting that mirrored the same image and led to the slide (or maybe you still would have, because gamers tend to be curious like that). Still, for many players, seeing that same image more than once made it feel important.
That is part of why this installation is hitting fans so hard. It is not just pretty to look at. It taps directly into a specific memory from one of Nintendo’s most beloved games.
This stained-glass image can also be seen in the “Super Mario Galaxy” movie itself.
The “Super Mario Galaxy” movie is slated for release on April 1, 2026, and expands on the storyline of Mario and Luigi, the twin plumbers who bring their upbeat attitude to everyday problems in their new lives in the Mushroom Kingdom. Along the way, they are joined by Yoshi, who has been revealed to be voiced by Donald Glover.
Before long, they are pulled into a new adventure where Bowser Jr. is still determined to rescue his father. Fans will also meet Rosalina, a character many have been curious about ever since seeing her in the Super Mario Galaxy game.
