Universal Pictures and Blumhouse recently presented a sneak preview of Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 (FNAF 2) to attendees at San Diego Comic-Con. Additionally, Hollywood stars Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games) and Piper Rubio (For All Mankind are returning to the horror film. The duo, portraying the central brother and sister duo Mike and Abby, participated in the event. Following the critically acclaimed first film, what new dangers or unresolved issues from their past might the siblings now confront in the sequel?
Both Hutcherson and Rubio shared insights about the characters’ lives following the intense events depicted in the first Five Nights at Freddy’s film. Going by the preview and discussion, their characters, Mike and Abby, continue to grapple with the lingering trauma of their previous ordeal. More than that, they’ll face fresh threats within the unsettling world of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, potentially forcing them to rely on each other even more than before.
During the panel for Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, Hutcherson and Rubio went more in-depth, discussing their characters’ ongoing struggles. According to Hutcherson, his character, Mike, desperately seeks normalcy after the traumatic events of the first film, yet finds this impossible within Freddy Fazbear’s world. That said, can Mike truly move forward when he suppresses his unresolved trauma despite facing similar horrors again? Mike’s recurring plight gained Hutcherson’s sympathy, as the character essentially fakes coping until the nightmare inevitably resurfaces.
On another note, Hutcherson stated that he joined Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 with limited knowledge of the extensive game lore. As a result, he frequently relies on co-star Rubio as the resident expert. Although he actively gleans valuable insights from Rubio’s understanding, he still primarily experiences the story through Mike’s perspective. Additionally, the Hunger Games star revealed that Mangle was his personal favorite character, enthusiastically crediting the Jim Henson Creature Shop for bringing the animatronic to life. While marveling at the advanced puppeteering techniques and intricate design work, he stated that he was deeply impressed with the team, which achieved another level of complexity.
Meanwhile, another actor in the sequel film, Matthew Lillard, who portrays the cinematic William Afton, didn’t attend Comic-Con. Instead, Lillard made his presence known, introducing his Scream co-star Skeet Ulrich via video. Fan speculation that he plays Henry Emily, Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza co-founder and Afton’s former partner, only increased following Ulrich’s casting announcement. Furthermore, the actor offered a teasing hint about his mysterious role in Five Nights at Freddy’s 2.
Specifically, Ulrich stated that he portrays someone possessing a very particular past and a profound emotional connection to the unfolding events. Given this statement, the widespread fan theories about him playing Henry Emily are likely accurate. At the end of the panel, director Emma Tammi and producer Jason Blum showcased an extended clip for Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, reminiscent of Scream‘s structure.
Gen Z actress McKenna Grace is featured within this sequence, as the host of a paranormal investigation channel visiting the original, ill-fated Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza location. In the clip, Grace’s character and her crew receive a tour from a deeply unsettling security guard through the derelict ruins. Notably, Grace’s character might serve as the opening victim in Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, similar to Drew Barrymore’s iconic role in Scream, evoked by the clip’s tone and her prominent role. Ultimately, the clip offers very few details of what to expect, but the suspenseful atmosphere within shows that the sequel may bring bigger scares than the original.
