Even since the early days of Overwatch, players have requested that Blizzard add a scoreboard for spectators. It has become less vital for Scrims due to workshop features allowing you to show in-game stats to the spectators. However, it has not been possible for the broadcasted matches, meaning the casters and viewers would not have access to stats mid-way. Thanks to the most recent Season 16 update, the pain points have been alleviated for Overwatch 2 players.
The Spectator Scoreboard is now available in two game modes for Overwatch 2: Stadium and Custom Games. Stadium has access presumably for spectating mid-match since it has the Spectator Scoreboard during replays. However, all other replays have the Spectator Scoreboard, but it is not working as intended and does not display any stats for players in the game.
If you want the Spectator Scoreboard in Custom Game lobbies, you must enable Team Overlay in the lobby settings. While hosting the Custom Game lobby, follow these steps: Settings->Modes->All->Enable Team Overlay. If you have done it correctly, all spectators can access the in-game scoreboard by pressing the same key they use during games. Hopefully, they will fix the scoreboard for replays so you can use your replays and see where the issues lie as the match is happening.
Most trained casters can understand the overall flow of the best performers in the teams during matches. However, the stats allow them more information to understand the flow of team fights. Sometimes, final blows do not always tell the story of a team fight. A Genji may have ended the fight with five final blows, but his Sojourn dealt most of the damage, an aspect that stats will tell you.
For broadcasters, it is more difficult to display the scoreboard since you need to show what is happening in the game, even during those downtime moments. However, showing the stats to viewers at various moments will give them a decent sense of how the fights are playing out, even if they have not watched the entire map.
