For those who are new to the PAX scene, PAX stands for Penny Arcade Expo. While it has evolved immensely over the years since it was first introduced in 2004. The first day of PAX East included an on-stage appearance of the founders of both Penny Arcade comics and the entire PAX culture. Jerry Holkins and Chris Thurmond took the main stage to answer questions from fans early on the first day. Let’s go a bit deeper into how the Q&A presentation went and what they revealed in the questions they were asked.
All of this started with the creation of a webcomic called Penny Arcade. The brand grew in influence and evolved over the years until, in 2004, the creators had the idea to start a conversation that was specifically for gamers. They felt like the convention space was dominated by other hobbies like comic books and anime, and they wanted to carve their own lane within the scene. Jerry even referred to his own daughter sitting in the front row cheering as the princess of PAX and claiming that she was born in a palace, which is true; she’s definitely royalty.
The two exchange quips and make witty remarks they causing laughs throughout the audience. They answered various questions, most of which had a light tone to them, allowing the two creators to keep it light, funny, and cheerful throughout the Q&A. They were asked about their favorite stories as children, their last movies that they watched, who is the greatest comic book artist of all time, and other lighthearted subjects.
Some more serious subjects came up, like the overall state of the gaming industry, how it can be tied to more nefarious world politics, and what the creators thought that fans should do to combat this. They spoke about bringing back some old projects, like news stories following the epilogue episode of C-Team, and what the status is on finishing Brood Hollow. Chris says the letter is very challenging. The two did promise more sea team stories every quarter. Kanye West even came up as a hero whom they can no longer believe in anymore.
Overall, the Penny Arcade Q&A was a continuation of a fan favorite staple of the PAX experience. There were no major spoilers or reveals during the presentation…Unless you had the movie Chris watched last night in your Netflix ‘Watch Later’ queue. The two creators just shared a positive energy and a feeling of welcome for the PAX community
