Permadeath Comes To Resident Evil Finally

Look, I gotta be honest with you—I have no clue how anyone survives Resident Evil on the highest difficulty without cheating. We’re talking about Requiem mode here. You know the one. Enemies one-shot you from across the map, those BSAA zombies have aimbot like they’re pro Call of Duty players, and the game sticks you with a handgun from the bar that handles like a wet noodle. It feels like there’s a Capcom developer hiding behind a corner, just waiting to watch you faceplant into a bear trap. But hey, if that base level of suffering somehow isn’t enough for you, one modder decided to turn the heat up to eleven.

Modder Creates Digital Cruelty Masterpiece

Enter “Ironman Mode,” a beautiful act of digital cruelty cooked up by someone named silentverge. This isn’t just a harder difficulty; it’s a whole new way to play where death has actual consequences. And I mean actual. We’re not talking about losing a little progress here. If you die—or hit a game over screen, so be extra careful when you’re covering Grace outside that creepy church—your save file gets wiped. Deleted. Gone. Poof.

You can slap this mod onto any difficulty you want, even the soul-crushing Insanity setting, so you can really tailor your own personal nightmare. But let’s be real, silentverge knows exactly which sickos this mod is for. Would the former director of Resident Evil 2, Hideki Kamiya, even attempt this? He’s the guy who once begged Capcom for a “non-scary” mode. Honestly, I’d pay good money to watch him try.

Requiem Mode Wasn’t Painful Enough Apparently

The mod description calls it “perfect for challenge runs, hardcore players, and streamers looking for the ultimate survival test.” And honestly, if you’re going to do a run like this, you have to go all the way. You’ve gotta crank it to Insanity. Beating the entire game without a single death or game over isn’t just a win; it’s a badge of honor you can wear forever. Just be prepared for the emotional toll. By the end, you might find yourself more frustrated than a cured Zeno right before he gets his signature haircut—you know, the one that involves decapitation.

This whole experience might just feel like a Requiem for your free time. How long do you think it’ll take for a streamer to break their controller over this? It’s the absolute perfect content for them, kind of like those endless Soulsborne challenge runs. I can’t wait to see someone pick this up and try it on the highest difficulty live on camera.

Game Over Screen Now Reads “Start Over”

For an extra layer of pain, you could even toss in a randomizer mod, but that might be pushing it. Then again, who am I to say what’s too far? People beat Elden Ring on a dance mat. This is practically normal. Do you really hate yourself that much? Because you could also throw in a “More Enemies” mod just for kicks.

Here’s how it works, straight from the mod page: “Death permanently auto-deletes all save files on your current difficulty type playthrough. So, if you are playing on Standard (Classic), for example, it will delete both autosave files and any other Standard (Classic) manual save files. Same goes for any other difficulty, preserving other difficulties’ save files.” So yeah, it’s pretty thorough. It’s a digital Requiem for your progress.

Emotional Toll Higher Than Zombie Body Count

Maybe permadeath on Insanity is a bit too much of a Requiem for your tastes. If you’re looking for a challenge but don’t want to subject yourself to that level of digital torture, there’s another option. Another modder, MightyKusKus, has a brilliant mod called “Sanity.” It replaces the highest difficulty with a more reasonable Hardcore mode.

It’s oddly missing from RE9, so this fills that gap perfectly. It’s a challenge, sure, but it won’t make you want to play a Requiem for your save file. It’s the perfect middle ground for when you want the tension without the existential dread. Have you ever finished a game and felt like you needed a moment of silence? That’s the Requiem we all need sometimes.
