Pigface is an upcoming horror first-person shooter. You play as a woman named Exit who has a bomb implanted in her head. Now you must kill, kill, and kill some more in order to get out alive.
The game’s Steam page says, ”
You’re a terrible person who has done awful things, and now your past has finally caught up to you. As you wake up in an abandoned warehouse covered in your own blood, you hear a phone ring from across the room. They’ve drilled a bomb into your head, and now they have a job for you.” Thus, you must go through “a kinetic, fast-paced, ultra-violent world where you fulfil contracts for those holding you hostage.”
The game’s teaser trailer shows a lot of shooting through enemies, hacking off limbs and heads. It feels reminiscent of the nineties, when gore was a selling point for games because shock value sold well. The Steam page promises that you can “use shotguns, rifles, pistols, hammers, landmines, grenades . . . it doesn’t matter.” It also advertises that you can obtain different masks, which “enhance your ability to kill.” Gamers who like mowing through enemies and bathing themselves in blood should find a lot to like about this game.
The publisher, DreadXP, has put out other interesting horror titles, many of which borrow elements from retro games. Some of their other titles include Hand of Doom, which takes inspiration from nineties FMV games, and I Don’t Exist: A Modern Text Adventure, which is inspired by text adventure games from the eighties. Pigface looks like it will fit right in with the publisher’s history of weird, retro-inspired horror games.
The world of indie horror games is a vast and unique place. Some will over a tense, psychological experience, while others let you enjoy being showered with jump scares. Pigface looks to be an over-the-top, blood-soaked experience, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Sometimes we don’t need a game that makes us think too much. Sometimes it can just be satisfying to come charging in and rip off some limbs.
