With the recent announcement made by GameStop declaring that the Sony PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Nintendo Wii U are, for all practical purposes, officially retro consoles, Sony has also put out a software update for the PlayStation 3, almost a year after the last update for the console. This comes as a shock, given that it’s been 20 years since the console was released.
This update focuses on bringing system performance improvements, specifically renewing the encryption key needed to play Blu-ray discs, which will essentially soft-lock disc drives for the console. Here’s all you need to know about the new software update for the PlayStation 3, and what this means for all the gamers out there still using this retro console.
Even after 20 years, Sony is still dedicated to supporting a good gaming experience for players who are still on the retro platform. Essentially, if you’ve still got a PlayStation 3 console, you’ll notice there’s a system software update. Sony released the 4.93 update for PlayStation 3 consoles worldwide this morning.
In a short post on the Sony PlayStation website, the update 4.93 requires 200MB of free space, and is centered around ‘additional features, improved usability, and enhanced security.’ Part of the update also highlights that you won’t be able to run discs in your PlayStation 3 until you’ve installed the 4.93 update. These changes are part of a way to keep PlayStation 3 servers online for gamers who still enjoy the user interface that the console has to offer.
Sony announced the update on their official socials, as well as put out a notice on their support page on the PlayStation website. Here is the official statement made on the PlayStation support page, underlining what is required to install the update:
PS3 system software update 4.93
To download the update, you need a minimum of 200MB of free space on either the PS3 Hard Disk Drive (System Update) or on removable storage media (PC Update).
Always update your PS3 system to the latest version of the system software. By updating, you can enjoy additional features, improved usability, and enhanced security.
Please note, to play Blu-ray discs, your PS3 system needs a renewed Blu-ray player encryption key. Please update your PS3 system software to the latest version to renew the Blu-ray player encryption key.
Earlier this week, GameStop put out an official statement declaring that the Sony PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Nintendo Wii U are now officially considered retro consoles. Also, according to the announcement, “GameStop will run a Retro Trade-In Bonus offer now through March 21st,” where “customers who bring in Wii U, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, or any older consoles, games, or accessories will be rewarded with an additional 10% in trade credit.”
The announcement doesn’t necessarily change much; however, the milestone that these consoles have achieved is incredible and celebrates them. Funnily, GameStop ended their message stating, “GameStop would also like to remind the public that while these systems are now officially classified as retro, they are still very cool, and anyone who owned one at launch is absolutely not old.”
2026 has definitely proven to be a year of change, especially within the gaming industry. Game developers are pumping out games so rapidly, with even bigger releases coming out later on this year, such as GTA 6, the God of War Trilogy Remake, Silent Hill Townfall, and Hellraiser Revival. With all these exciting releases, I’m very excited to see what the rest of this year will bring, especially since we’re only about a quarter through 2026, and there’s so much more to be announced.
