PlayStation Plus monthly drops can be hit or miss. Some months you get absolute bangers, and other months you’re left wondering if Sony’s intern picked the lineup while half asleep. But October 2025? They actually knocked it out of the park.
Starting October 7th (and running through November 3rd), PlayStation Plus Essential subscribers get three genuinely solid titles: Alan Wake 2, Goat Simulator 3, and Cocoon. Yeah, you read that right. Alan Wake 2. The same game that had critics practically tripping over themselves with praise when it launched in 2023.
Let’s start with the obvious star of the show. Remedy Entertainment’s psychological survival-horror masterpiece is joining the Essential tier, and honestly, if you haven’t played it yet, you’re in for a treat. Or a nightmare. Probably both.
The game splits your time between the titular Alan Wake (who’s been trapped in a nightmarish dimension called the Dark Place) and FBI Special Agent Saga Anderson, who’s investigating some truly disturbing ritualistic murders in Bright Falls. It’s creepy, it’s atmospheric, and it’s the kind of game that’ll have you second-guessing whether you really need to use the bathroom at 2 AM. (Spoiler: You can hold it.)
Critics went absolutely wild for this one when it dropped, and for good reason. The storytelling is top-notch, the atmosphere is suffocating in the best possible way, and the gameplay loop of piecing together the mystery while trying not to get murdered by shadow creatures? Chef’s kiss.
If you’re more into brain-tickling puzzles than pants-wetting horror, Cocoon has you covered. This award-winning indie gem from 2023 flew under a lot of people’s radars, which is a shame because it’s genuinely brilliant.
You play as this tiny insect-like creature hopping in and out of various orbs (yes, really), and each orb contains its own mini-world. The puzzle design is clever without being frustrating, and each level culminates in a puzzle-boss fight that’ll make you feel like a genius when you finally crack it.
The best part? It’s perfect for a lazy weekend when you want something engaging but not overwhelming. Plus, it won’t take you 60+ hours to complete, which is honestly refreshing in an era where every game wants to be a never-ending commitment.
And then there’s Goat Simulator 3. Because sometimes you just need to be a goat causing absolute mayhem, and honestly? That’s valid.
This is pure, unadulterated chaos. Your only job is to wreak havoc, smash stuff, complete ridiculous quests, and somehow work your way up the ranks of the Illuminati. (Don’t ask. Just go with it.) It’s stupid. It’s silly. It’s exactly what you need after a long day of pretending to be a functional adult.
The multiplayer is where it really shines—grab some friends and compete to see who can cause the most destruction. It’s therapeutic in a weird way, like popping bubble wrap but with more explosions and confused NPCs.
Essential tier isn’t the only one getting some love. The Last of Us Part II Remastered joined the Extra catalog on September 26th, which is massive if you somehow missed one of the most talked-about (and controversial) games of the PS4 era.
The higher tiers also give you access to an absolutely stacked Game Catalogue. We’re talking Control: Ultimate Edition, Death Stranding Director’s Cut, Demon’s Souls, DOOM Eternal, and Horizon Forbidden West. That’s not even mentioning the classic PS1, PS2, PS3, and PSP games available on Premium.
Oh, and Premium subscribers get game trials too—so you can test drive games like Baldur’s Gate 3 (two hours), Cyberpunk 2077 (five hours), and God of War Ragnarök (three hours) before committing. Your progress carries over if you buy the full game, which is actually pretty consumer-friendly for once.
Before you get too comfortable, remember that PlayStation Plus giveth and PlayStation Plus taketh away. Four games are leaving mid-October:
If any of those have been sitting in your backlog, taunting you, now’s the time to actually fire them up. Or don’t. I’m not your mom.
PlayStation Plus can feel like a gamble sometimes. You’re paying for a subscription with the hope that Sony will deliver games you actually want to play. October 2025? They delivered.
Alan Wake 2 alone is worth the price of admission. Add in a clever indie puzzler and a ridiculous goat simulator, and you’ve got a surprisingly well-rounded month that caters to different gaming moods. Whether you want atmospheric horror, brain-bending puzzles, or mindless chaos, there’s something here for you.
And if you’re on the fence about subscribing, check out the latest PS Plus deals—there are usually some decent discounts floating around that make the Essential tier even more appealing.
So yeah, fire up your PS5 (or PS4—most of these are cross-gen), claim your games, and get ready to lose some sleep to Alan Wake 2. Just maybe keep the lights on. Trust me on this one.
