At PAX East 2025, Gearbox Entertainment grabbed everyone’s attention when Randy Pitchford and the Borderlands 4 developers stepped up to share details about the next chapter in the looter-shooter saga. Fans had been waiting for this moment, and the panel didn’t hold back. From story twists to fresh gameplay features, there was plenty to unpack. If you’re as excited as I am about Borderlands 4, PAX East gave us a lot to talk about—let’s dive in! For more gaming updates, head over to Total Apex Gaming.

What’s New with Borderlands 4

The panel started with some big story reveals. Lilith’s sacrifice to teleport Elpis has sent the Crimson Raiders on a galaxy-wide search for her. A new villain, the Timekeeper, steps in, banning vault hunting and using cybernetic implants to control the Kairos. Removing those implants messes with personalities, which sounds like it’ll shake things up. You can read more about it in the MentalMars recap.

Then there are the four new vault hunters: Vex, a Siren with kinetic and summoning powers; Rafa, an Exo-Soldier mixing guns and blades; Harlowe, a TRAUUUNT with gravity and disco ball attacks; and Amon, a Forgeknight with drones and weapons galore. These characters look like they’ll bring a ton of variety to the game, as shared on the Gearbox Official PAX East page.

Gameplay’s getting an upgrade too. Dynamic weather like rain, snow, and dust will change how you see and play. Multiple vaults you can rerun, plus vehicle customizations, are on the way. And here’s a twist—a compass is replacing the minimap. Randy Pitchford explained it by saying, “We made a big freaking world,” according to Eurogamer.

How Fans and Devs Are Reacting

The Borderlands community is buzzing. The new vault hunters and weather system have people hyped, but the minimap switch has sparked some chatter. Pitchford responded to the criticism, asking fans to “play the game first and understand the choices we’ve made.” He’s all about pulling players into the world itself, as noted in the PCGamesN article. It’s a bold move—will it pay off?

Pricing came up too. Pitchford hinted it might follow trends from Nintendo and Microsoft, especially since the budget’s over twice that of Borderlands 3. Check out the Kotaku article for more on that.

What’s Next for Borderlands 4
