Resident Evil Requiem is the newest installment in the Resident Evil franchise, and is predicted to be one of the scariest Resident Evil games to come out. Judging from the preview, that definitely seems to be the case. Resident Evil Requiem director, Koshi Nakanishi, claims this game will be an upgrade to Resident Evil 2’s style of horror and gameplay. Here’s all Nakanishi had to say about the upcoming game.

Resident Evil Requiem’s Horror

The Resident Evil series is known for its high-action horror, especially with the first 6 games. Resident Evil 2 and Biohazard introduced horror elements in the series that elevated the series within the horror genre, and these two games are generally considered pretty scary.

Resident Evil Requiem will follow Resident Evil 2’s footprint in terms of horror and gameplay. It will be a psychological horror focused on suspenseful horror that was actively present in RE2. This gives Requiem direction, stepping away from the action to make something uniquely horrifying within this franchise. Though Requiem will follow RE2’s style of horror, the horror aspect will still differ. I get the sense that Requiem will be worlds scarier than RE2.

Nakanishi Interview

Requiem director Koshi Nakanishi addressed the influence RE2 had on the making of Requiem. Here’s what he said:

“broadly classify Resident Evil titles on a scale of how much they’re like Resident Evil 2 or Resident Evil 4.”

“adding more and more action to outdo the previous title”

“so far in the action direction that it was no longer horror.”

“firmly swing the scale toward the Resident Evil 2 style, which makes Requeim almost an upgrade”

Nakanishi also explains that they’ve created so many horror games that sometimes it is difficult to tell if something they create is scary until someone else plays it. He states,

“What if [Grace] gets a big gash in her leg, or her leg gets cut off, because that thing attacks her, and oh my god, it’s so scary, but we talked ourselves down a little bit.”

Horror definitely became a focal point in this Resident Evil game, considering the amount of time devs have spent going back and forth between different ideas. I’m glad the devs settled on psychological horror, given it’s my favorite type of horror, and only time will tell if this is a good fit for the series. Resident Evil Requiem is set to release on February 27, 2026, on all platforms, including the new Switch 2. Don’t miss out on more updates on the game.
