Silent Hill f is set to drop this Thursday, and fans (myself included) are pumped for the upcoming release. Konami has been gracious enough to spoil us with all the different trailers that have been released, show us a little bit of a preview of the game at Gamescom, and players who have pre-ordered the game can gain early access. So what’s the score? Is Silent Hill f worth the hype it’s receiving? Or does it fall short of the pedestal it’s on?
Silent Hill f shocked fans of the series with its stunning visuals, grotesque monsters, and a refreshing new storyline introducing a new main protagonist. As Hinako Shimizu, you become trapped in a hellish version of her hometown Ebisugaoka, and must fight your way out of the nightmare that storms its way through the town. Notice how I said fight. Yes, different from other Silent Hill games, Silent Hill f puts a lot of focus on combat, so much so that it is categorized as an action horror game. I know that may be a little discouraging for some, especially fans who’ve played previous games, but hear me out.
Though this game puts an emphasis on action in terms of gameplay, I really feel it does not distract from the core of the game, the compelling and uncomfortable horror that the Silent Hill games and films are known for. From the demo, I actually felt a little scared, from the stitched body part figures to the blind crawlers you have to evade when you are transported to another dimension. It was pretty intense battling these monsters because it’s pretty easy to mess up the parry and dodge system that the game added. But it elevates the horror aspect of the game; it does not diminish it.
Silent Hill f is definitely worth your time. The map of the town is incredibly large, so there’s so much to explore. Throughout the game, you can collect little charms called Omamori’s which upgrade things like health and stamina. The creatures you fight are incredibly horrifying, definitely have that Silent Hill flare. I talked about it in a different article, but this game explores life in Japan during the 1960s.
It’s an interesting concept to explore this idea in a new Silent Hill game. It gives nuance within this game and complements the horror of Silent Hill. This game is a 9/10 for me, and I hope people will enjoy this bloody experience of a game once it releases.
