Silent Hill f has had a successful first week, from selling one million copies of the game in 4 days to receiving an 87 Metacritic score. However, many players have criticized the game for its difficult combat system and the supposed Dark Souls feel, rather than the usual oppressive atmosphere of the Silent Hill games. Though I don’t necessarily agree with these remarks, Silent Hill f producer, Motoi Okamoto, addresses all the criticism in a new interview with IGN Japan at the Tokyo Game Show this year.

Silent Hill f Faces Ire from Gamers

Though Silent Hill f has already been wildly successful in its first week after release, some players have reservations about the game, especially when it comes to the extensive combat system implemented in this installment. Silent Hill isn’t necessarily known for action; however, this installment of the series emphasizes action. This is the only part that caused concern among a substantial group of players.

When Silent Hill f dropped a HANDS-ON Preview of the game at this year’s Gamescom, players felt the combat changed the feel of this Silent Hill game too much. “It didn’t feel like I was playing Silent Hill”, was the overall sentiment of players after playing the demo. This caused such an uproar, devs and producers of the game had to address it.

IGN Interview With Motoi Okamoto

Silent Hill f producer, Motoi Okamoto, addresses the issues the game has faced and why players shouldn’t have to worry when it comes to future installments. Okamoto explains:

“The spiritual journey of the protagonist, as she faces her trauma and inner turmoil, is what ultimately makes it Silent Hill-like,”

“That doesn’t mean every future Silent Hill will be like Silent Hill f,”

“Each one will have its own distinct flavour. We want to keep experimenting and be ambitious, both in terms of gameplay design and storytelling, so please look forward to the next Silent Hill as well.”

“We aim to create a series that is always challenging in a positive way, offering a different flavour of gameplay with each title,”

“Some things will remain unchanged, and the most important of these is the quality of the story. We firmly believe that a psychological story is essential to the essence of Silent Hill, and we will continue to focus on this aspect, confidently delivering it in future works.”

Personally, I loved Silent Hill f. Playing the game last week, I know I thoroughly enjoyed everything, from exploration to the story, and even the combat, regardless of its difficulty. Silent Hill f will not be a footprint for future installments, and I appreciate the devs for working harder than ever to create distinctly different games for the series in the future.
