Despite what some less-than-charitable AAA studios might think, the modding community in video games today is not only extending the life of otherwise “dead” games, but they can improve the experience and enjoyment of newer titles. Baldur’s Gate 3, while already huge and filled with countless hours of fun, can be further enhanced by mods. I’ve narrowed down the top 5 mods you need to try out to make your adventures ever more iconic and memorable.
One of the best ways to improve the experience in a game you already love and perhaps have already done several playthroughs of is to raise the difficulty. But merely giving more health and higher damage to enemies sometimes just doesn’t cut it. That’s why this Baldur’s Gate 3 mod may just be what you’re looking for.
Made by Khione95, this mode takes things a little further in terms of difficulty. For starters, it increases the overall intelligence of the foes you face. You’ll find they will actively avoid presenting you with Attacks of Opportunity, forcing you to be more creative in exploiting advantages for your party. Oh, do you have really low health? Better start getting creative because these enhanced enemies will now target you and finish the job if they can manage it. This may or may not entice you to play a little more tactically.
Are your foes getting wrecked by your party? Well, if they have healing potions, they’ll try to ensure their own cohorts get a swig to continue fighting. Why should you be the only side with cooperative potential? And if they have ranged specialists? They’ll duck for cover after shooting because, well, duh.
Another fantastic way to go about making a new playthrough unique and fresh is to experiment with different character looks! While Baldur’s Gate 3’s character customization is already pretty extensive, trying out Ghouls Customization Compendium by ghouls0rules may be the key to immersing yourself in a more visually unique character!
This mod provides you with more options for heads for all races, dramatically adding to all the combinations that are possible. It also includes a new assortment of hairstyles and even beards! Now you can have more options for your female dwarf to compare to her bearded-ly inclined friends! And if that wasn’t enough, this mod also includes additional horns for your favorite tieflings. With options like “Nice Rack Large Antlers” and “Incubus Curls”, they’re bound to add some unsubtle touches to your new adventurer!
Transmog: A feature that personally is near and dear to my heart. I can’t tell you how many hours I’ve logged in Guild Wars 2 trying to find the right combination of items to transmog my Necromancer into a stunning beauty of undead perfection. But with Eralyne’s Baldur’s Gate 3 mod, “Transmog Enhanced”, you too can spend hours playing what is functionally a dress-up game!
Now, while installing this mod may take a little know-how and other mods to help support it, it’s 100% worth the extra time. It claims to be able to change the appearance of ANY equipment into any other, including that of other modded items. With the addition of Ghouls Customization Compendium, this mod combo by itself can massively rekindle that love for roleplaying.
What do we love that makes everything better? A good boy, that’s what! While it’s tempting to bring Scratch along on our deadly adventures, you may find that it’s a recipe for heartbreak. He may have a heart of steel, but our fur baby is still made of mere flesh. But fear not! This Baldur’s Gate 3 mod by FrostShell makes Scratch’s inclusion in the party more worthwhile!
This mod adds new abilities, improved stats, and even corrects a few bugs already present in-game! Get motivated by Scratch’s new Lucky Bark ability! With this, he can distract enemies and can also give your party a Bardic Inspiration! But what about when he’s much closer to the action? Fear not! With Takedown, this allows our boy to attempt to tackle his target. But what if his target is already prone? Then he’ll instead fetch (disarm) their weapon! Good boy!
With Scraction Surge, Scratch Mark, Guard Dog, and others, Scratch will not only be just a simple team mascot, he’ll be PART of the team! And as if that wasn’t already a reason to download this mod, it also includes improved Summon Scratch. This adds, in the mod creator’s own words, “…some swanky new VFX and unlimited out of combat uses.” So, what are you waiting for!?
Last, but CERTAINLY not least, this powerhouse of a mod presents a whole new level of fresh gameplay in Baldur’s Gate 3. Yoonmoonsick’s impressive work of incorporating elements from the LOTR roleplaying game is nothing short of fantastic, and if you love J.R.R. Tolkien’s work, you’ll surely have a grand old time.
With new classes, sub-classes, and feats, this mod will no doubt make your new playthrough exciting. Trying to summarize such a big mod would be a feat on its own, so I’ll instead tease you with what’s available in this incredible project.
You could be a Captain, a “valiant fighter and leader of others”, or a Chieftain, “leader and a weaponmaster, accustomed to leading your comrades by jumping first into battle.” Or perhaps you want something less in-your-face, like a Messenger, who’s an “experienced traveller and advisor, carrying tidings to distant lands” who has a Bard Spell Casting ability and Unarmored Defense at level 1.
That doesn’t even scratch the surface! With feats like Friendly and Familiar, giving you improved charisma and, what’s that, a doubled proficiency bonus for Insight checks? Sign me up! Or others like Small Folk, increasing your Dexterity, and adding that you don’t provoke Opportunity Attacks. And there are many, many more to skim through and build around. So, why not extend your playtime while also playing out a Middle-earth Baldur’s Gate 3 crossover?
