Sonic Racing Crossworlds is set to receive an open network test that is free for anyone to be able to join and get a little taste of the newest entry in the racing series. Being available across all the platforms, it is set to release later this year, as opposed to the previously exclusive to PS5 Closed Beta Test that was conducted earlier this year.

What is Sonic Racing Crossworlds?

It is the newest entry in the Sonic Racing sub-series, which largely saw its start with the previous Team Sonic Racing, which released on May 21st, 2019. Though it can be dated back further to Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing, which was released on February 23rd, 2010. While it is focused primarily on this car racing game style, it also aims to draw in fans of the other racing titles–aiming for a history across all the worlds! Such as with the Sonic Riders series, Sonic R, and even Sonic Drift!

Though most of the characters and tracks primarily pull from the modern Sonic cast of characters, a newly revealed track from Sonic Superstars was spotted during the trailer that showcased the collaboration it will receive with the PAC-MAN series. We can also expect to see other collaborations take place with the game. Much like in a prior entry, Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, characters owned by SEGA, such as Ichiban from the Like A Dragon series, will appear as guest characters. As well, downloadable content will feature characters being added from: SpongeBob SquarePants, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Minecraft.

What is the Open Network Test?

The opportunity for fans and those interested in trying the game can get a small taste early for a few days! While it was also advertised in their newly released Competition Trailer, they have opened up a page detailing all you need to know about the test. In which you can view for more details and to sign up, you can get behind the wheel starting on August 29th, 2025, and it will last until September 2nd, 2025. Eligible for anyone to join, on their platform of choice.

Here are some additional details to know about the test:

  • Take part in both the Offline and Online modes with an expanded roster since the Closed Beta Test.
  • Pair up with up to four friends in a lobby online, available across all platforms and featuring cross-play!
  • Receive exclusive decals for participating in the test, much like the name tags granted to those during the Closed Beta Test.
  • Score a chance to try our Persona 5‘s iconic Phantom Thief, Joker, and his personalized Arsene Wing vehicle for a short time starting on August 31st, 2025, until September 1st, 2025. Along with it, a Persona 5-themed event and decals will be given to players during it.

Are you ready to start your engines?

Sonic Racing Crossworlds is looking to be an exciting title to look forward to. It is set to release later this year on September 25, 2025, across multiple platforms: Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 & 5, Xbox Series X|S, as well as PC, either via the Steam or Epic Games Store storefronts. With a Nintendo Switch 2 version being planned for later on, allowing those of the original Nintendo Switch version to be able to upgrade when it’s released.

Those who purchase deluxe editions or, at the very least, pre-order, are given the ability to play with additional characters: Werehog from Sonic Unleashed and characters from the Sonic Prime TV series will be added to the roster. With downloadable content such as for characters, vehicles, and tracks, both free and paid will be released over time into the year of 2026. Hopefully, aiming for a long-term plan to keep players interested in the game for quite a while.
