Sony is once again increasing the cost of gaming for PlayStation users. The company announced that prices for PlayStation Plus subscriptions will rise beginning May 20 for new customers in select regions, citing “ongoing market conditions” as the primary reason behind the change.
The move immediately sparked backlash online, especially as gamers are already dealing with rising console prices, more expensive games, and growing concerns about the long-term cost of modern gaming. Under the updated pricing structure, a one-month PlayStation Plus Essential subscription will increase from $9.99 to $10.99, while the three-month plan jumps from $24.99 to $27.99.
Sony confirmed current subscribers will not be affected unless their subscription lapses or changes — except in Turkey and India, where the price adjustments apply more broadly. The timing of the increase is drawing even more attention because it arrives just months before the planned launch of Grand Theft Auto VI, a release expected to bring millions of players online.
Sony publicly attributed the increase to “ongoing market conditions,” a phrase that has become increasingly common across the gaming industry over the last two years. Rising hardware costs, inflation, supply chain instability, and growing memory shortages tied to AI infrastructure demand have all contributed to higher expenses for gaming companies.
The issue has become so widespread that industry observers recently started referring to the RAM and SSD shortage situation as “RAMageddon.” Sony is far from alone. Microsoft recently raised prices for Xbox hardware, while Nintendo also announced pricing changes tied to the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.
Sony itself already raised prices for the PlayStation 5 earlier this year. Still, many players argue subscription price hikes feel particularly frustrating because online gaming access already requires recurring payments in the first place.
Importantly, the price increase currently appears limited to the PlayStation Plus Essential tier. That entry-level plan is required for online multiplayer on most PS4 and PS5 games and also includes monthly downloadable games and store discounts.
As of now:
Sony has not announced any immediate changes for the Extra or Premium tiers. That distinction matters because many users already feel the higher-priced plans offer better overall value through their large game libraries.

Whether Sony says it publicly or not, many gamers believe the looming release of GTA 6 plays a major role in the timing of this increase. Rockstar’s upcoming blockbuster is widely expected to become the biggest entertainment launch in history when it arrives on November 19, 2026. And just like current versions of GTA Online, online functionality for GTA 6 will almost certainly require an active PlayStation Plus subscription on PS5. That creates enormous potential subscriber growth for Sony.
Some players online believe Sony intentionally moved forward with the increase now, before millions of casual players potentially subscribe specifically for GTA Online access later this year. The theory has fueled additional frustration across gaming communities already concerned about rising entertainment costs.
The backlash was immediate after Sony’s announcement.
From Sony’s perspective, gaming development, infrastructure, cloud services, and hardware manufacturing have all become dramatically more expensive.
Subscription services are increasingly important for stabilizing long-term revenue.
Unlike some previous subscription increases, Sony is not automatically charging most existing members higher rates unless their plans lapse or change.
That softens the impact somewhat.
One of the biggest complaints remains simple:
Many gamers still fundamentally dislike paying subscription fees just to access online multiplayer.
That frustration resurfaces every time prices increase.
Players are now dealing with:
For many consumers, gaming is starting to feel significantly less affordable than it did just a few years ago.
Some fans also pointed out the awkward timing compared to Microsoft recently lowering or restructuring portions of Xbox Game Pass offerings in certain markets.
That comparison intensified criticism of Sony’s “market conditions” explanation.
Despite slowing PS5 hardware sales, Sony still expects its gaming profits to rise substantially this financial year. The company recently forecast a major increase in gaming profitability thanks to stronger first-party software performance and the absence of costly setbacks like the losses tied to Bungie’s struggling live-service projects.
Upcoming exclusives, including Marvel’s Wolverine, are expected to play a major role in that strategy. And if GTA 6 performs anywhere close to industry expectations, Sony’s online ecosystem could see massive growth regardless of fan backlash surrounding subscription pricing.
Sony’s PlayStation Plus increase reflects a much larger issue across the gaming industry. Blockbuster games now cost hundreds of millions — sometimes billions — to develop. Hardware manufacturing remains volatile. AI infrastructure is increasing competition for critical components. Someone eventually absorbs those costs. Increasingly, that appears to be the consumer.
And as GTA 6, next-generation consoles, and subscription ecosystems continue reshaping the market, many players are wondering a difficult question:
How expensive will gaming become by the end of this decade?
Yes. Sony is increasing PlayStation Plus Essential prices for new subscribers beginning May 20.
The one-month Essential plan rises to $10.99, while the three-month plan increases to $27.99.
Most current subscribers are unaffected unless their subscription changes or lapses.
Sony cited “ongoing market conditions,” including rising costs across the gaming industry.
While not officially confirmed, GTA Online functionality on PS5 will likely require PlayStation Plus, similar to current GTA Online access.
