South of Midnight, the latest in a line of games developed by Compulsion Games, has seen a great deal of success only a month into its release. Although published by Xbox Studios, the smaller development company threads the needle between AA and AAA gaming, and thus has less reach than other games of that size. Yet the game still hit a major milestone, establishing itself as a strong force in the action genre. The hard work that Compulsion Games put into nailing each element of the game, especially when it comes to the setting.
The idea behind South of Midnight is to bring players to the Deep South and let them experience what the region truly has to offer in a modern climate. It is the historical and artistic accuracy, blending folklore, southern gothic tales, and beautiful southern visuals, that truly drew fans in. The storyline is both dark and heartfelt, and it allows players to feel every moment that the protagonist goes through. The success of Compulsion Games’ accurate storytelling has led the game to reach over 1 million users in under a month from launch, a milestone that most would not have anticipated.
The number of users on South of Midnight has largely been driven by its appearance on Xbox Game Pass, something that has also helped the growth of Avowed, Atomfall, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 in recent months. In speaking with Game Rant, Guillaume Provost shared why the game has resonated so well with fans: the region. “When we had the discussion originally, I thought that that specific region was pretty underserved in the video game market. Kentucky Route Zero is a good example, and you’ve seen it portrayed in Red Dead Redemption. But no one had really kind of dived in and mined the mythology of the area and looked at what made it iconic.”
The location has helped drive its success, but the incredible work in properly representing the region in South of Midnight has kept people playing and led to its positive reception.
Compulsion Games does not pretend to be a developer creating blockbuster entries. Instead, they aim to fill a void in the industry with heartfelt, relatable gaming experiences for members of diverse communities. “I’m passionate about that being part of the mission for the studio moving into the future. In terms of what audience, what experiences, and what areas of the world we’ll represent next, I can’t tell you. But I think it’s an important role within Xbox for us to be a brand that appeals to people from all walks of life.”
It is these statements that can keep fans excited for the continued success not just of South of Midnight, but the studio as a whole. The game offers a true-to-region experience, one that Provost worked tirelessly to research and replicate. Their hard work paid off, as supported by the games milestone success, and players who enjoy the experience should look forward to where Compulsion Games is headed next.
