Most gamers have experienced a beloved game disappearing into the ether when the publishers/developers. It’s a sad day. You may have paid for a copy of the game, for in-game items and perks, and you’ve spent a lot of time playing it. The Stop Killing Games movement is trying to put a stop to that. And a lobbying group has made a public response.

In their response, Video Games Europe said they “appreciate the passion of [the] community,” But they go on to provide several excuses for why it isn’t possible to allow game purchasers to continue to have access to their games after the official servers are shut down. They claim private servers aren’t a “viable alternative” because of safety for the players and their data. Further, they state that games designed to be online only cannot be left available to players because the cost would be prohibitive.

Analyzing the Response

Ross Scott, spokesperson of Stop Playing Games, analyzed the response in a YouTube video. He had quite a lot to say. And he makes sense. Game developers don’t spend all that time creating an amazing work of art to have it disappear. It’s the investors and company leaders who control the purse strings that make these kinds of decisions. It would be a simple thing for there to be a clause included in the Terms of Service to protect them from what happens after they end support. What would happen if Microsoft suddenly said you couldn’t use any old version of Windows because they stopped supporting it?

Scott says it very well. You can watch his video below.
