Subnautica 2: Unknown Worlds Entertainment Teases a Bold New Era

Subnautica 2 will no doubt bring equal wonder and horror to our living rooms, as previous entries simultaneously made players feel the existential dread of the deep, and invited us to live alongside wondrous creatures, the sequel promises to take that to another level. Unknown Worlds Entertainment started the series off beautifully, presenting us with an almost entirely underwater world where there were no walls, only lurking Leviathans, and the sequel gave us more land to explore…at the cost of just as much danger, never being totally safe above or below. The third entry to the series promises even more.

Learning From Its Predecessors

Unknown World Entertainment is set to showcase the latent entry with a powerful statement: “Subnautica 2 is shaping up to be our biggest and most ambitious Subnautica game ever”, says Design Lead Anthony Gallegos in the Dev Vlog. The team is working with veterans and fresh faces to make the underwater survival series more expensive than before, and a whole new alien world promises to bring us new discoveries, from the smallest fish to the menacing leviathans.

Subnautica 2 promises a new world, and with an already demonstrated ability to create entire alien ecosystems, we can only wonder at what strange new life we’ll see in the brand-new biomes, as well as what tools they’ll give us to explore them!

Early Access and Road Maps

With a planned release date of 2025 and a soon-to-be open Early Access, the team of Subnautica 2 is hard at work reaching out to the community to ask the big question: what is it you’d like to see? They’ve already confirmed something that hasn’t been in any of the Subnautica series so far: co-op for up to four players, while simultaneously reaching out to the fanbase for features to add on top of what they’ve already planned. Exploring the depths with a friend won’t make you any less safe. Subnautica’s worlds have always been too large for that, but I certainly wouldn’t mind a friendly voice to keep me company in the dark below.

Final Thoughts

The first time I picked up Subnautica, I was as enraptured as I was anxious. Sea life that was as alien as it was intriguing, from the smallest peeper to the largest Reaper. The series never makes you feel truly safe, but always makes sure you have the tools you need to survive the terrors of the deep, never taming it, but changing you. Subnautica 2 promises that, and to my joy and terror, so much more.
