Super Mario, Nintendo’s iconic plumber, has not only defined the platforming genre but has also left an indelible mark on the broader gaming landscape. Over the years, developers from various franchises have paid homage to Mario through clever cameos and references, showcasing the character’s influence and the industry’s appreciation for his legacy.

1. Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes (GameCube)

In this 2004 remake of the original Metal Gear Solid, players can find figures of Mario and Yoshi on a desk in Otacon’s lab. Shooting Mario triggers the classic 1-Up sound, restoring a small amount of health, while shooting Yoshi causes him to exclaim his name. This playful nod to Mario adds a touch of humor to the otherwise serious tone of the game.

2. Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest (SNES)

After completing the game, players can access “Cranky’s Video Game Heroes” mini-game, where their collected DK Coins are compared to other legendary video game characters. Mario, Yoshi, and Link appear in this mini-game, highlighting their status as gaming icons. Additionally, a sign reading “No Hoppers” humorously references Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog.

3. The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening (Game Boy)

In this surreal adventure, players encounter several Mario-themed elements. A Chain Chomp named BowWow aids Link, and various Mario enemies and items, such as Goombas and Warp Zones, make appearances throughout the game. These references add a layer of charm and nostalgia to the experience.

4. Kirby Super Star (SNES)

Kirby’s transformation ability includes turning into a golden statue of Mario, paying tribute to the character’s iconic status. Additionally, during the “Megaton Punch” mini-game, Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Birdo can be seen as spectators in the arena, further cementing Mario’s presence in the Nintendo universe.

5. Pilotwings 64 (N64)

In this flight simulation game, players can find Mario’s face carved into a mountain, reminiscent of Mount Rushmore. Shooting missiles at the carving reveals Wario’s face beneath, adding a humorous twist to the discovery.

6. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009)

In a house level, players can find a fictional GameStation console with a book titled “Italian Plumber Princess Rescue” beside it. This clear allusion to Super Mario Bros. serves as a subtle Easter egg for attentive players.

The Super Smash Bros. franchise has consistently featured Mario as a central character. In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, a “Paper Mario” stage was introduced, incorporating elements from various games in the series. Additionally, Mario-themed spirits from The Origami King were added in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, further integrating Mario’s legacy into the crossover fighting game.

8. Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope’s Peak High School (Anime)

In this anime series, a parody of Mario Kart 64 appears, complete with a Lakitu character who resets players after they fall off the track. This homage to Mario Kart adds a layer of familiarity for fans of the franchise.

9. Super Mario Crossover (Flash Game)

This fan-made game allows players to control characters from other NES games, such as Mega Man, Samus Aran, and Link, within the Super Mario Bros. universe. Each character retains their unique abilities, offering a fresh take on the classic Mario gameplay. While unofficial, the game showcases the enduring appeal of Mario and his world.

10. Super Mario Kart (Arcade)

In the arcade version of Super Mario Kart, players can find a hidden message that reads “Thank you for playing,” a direct nod to the game’s creator, Shigeru Miyamoto. This Easter egg reflects the developers’ appreciation for players’ support.

Super Mario’s influence extends far beyond his own series, with numerous games and media incorporating references and cameos that celebrate his legacy. These tributes not only honor Mario’s impact on the gaming industry but also highlight the interconnectedness of the gaming community, where creators acknowledge and pay homage to each other’s work. As the gaming landscape continues to evolve, Mario’s presence in other games serves as a testament to his enduring popularity and significance in the world of video games.
