If you’re hankering for a new horror game that combines murder animatronics, steampunk magic, and guns that literally only work if you fill them with your blood (via stabby stab), then look no further than Crisol Theater of Idols. This upcoming title from Blumhouse hits all those markers—and then some.
After watching the trailer ourselves, we can confidently say: this game is one for the senses. It literally had some of us cringing the entire time.
Crisol Theater of Idols follows in the footsteps of games like BioShock, placing you in a twisted universe—this one called Hispania, a dark, altered version of Spain. You’ll play as Gabriel, a soldier who uses blood as both a weapon and a lifeline. Can’t wait to see those mechanics in action when you’ve got to fight and stay alive with the same resource.
Your mission? Explore the cursed island of Tormentosa—yes, it’s as ominous as it sounds—and uncover dark secrets while encountering truly horrifying enemies.
Tormentosa might look deceptively beautiful, with crumbling ruins and eerie landscapes, but it’s filled with cults, labyrinthine streets, and dark rituals. Don’t worry—you’re armed. Kind of. Your primary weapon just so happens to be your own lifeblood.
Seriously. Your blood is your ammunition.
You’ll wield this grim power against your enemies, solve intricate puzzles, and try not to die in the process—because every shot you take drains your life. It’s a brutal tradeoff, and you’ll need a serious strategy to survive.
Thankfully, you can upgrade this ability. Boost your blood’s lethality, fight for longer, or unlock combat bonuses. There should be a good number of weapons too, all of which can be bought with coins you find while exploring Tormentosa.
If you were bummed that BioShock didn’t make an appearance at Summer Game Fest (same), don’t worry—you’re not alone. Crisol Theater of Idols just might scratch that itch. With its unique game mechanics and beautifully creepy setting, it holds its own in the horror-action space.
There’s no release date yet, but you can wishlist the game on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
