Sony is celebrating a major milestone with the new God of War 20th Anniversary Edition DualSense controller. Compared to the vibrant God of War Ragnarok controller, this model presents a more subtle tribute from the 2022 game. Its design features a primarily white base with a striking red stripe along the right grip, directly referencing Kratos’ iconic face tattoo. Given this minimalist approach, does the controller successfully capture the essence of the franchise?
Players will find the God of War 20th Anniversary logo on the controller’s backside, marking the special occasion. Among the four limited-edition DualSense models, this anniversary controller will arrive alongside the other models in October. So why this particular month? To begin with, two distinct Ghost of Yotei controllers will become available on the second of that month.
Both of these simple designs are primarily white but feature more intricate artwork than the God of War version. For potential buyers, model selection offers a choice between black or gold decorative accents. Notably, the black-accented version will be a PlayStation Direct exclusive, while the gold-accented one will see a wider release at all major retailers.
Additionally, PlayStation has prepared to release an updated version of its popular Astro Bot controller. Called the Joyful Edition, this new model swaps the previous wide-eyed design for a cheerful white and blue scheme featuring the blue and white robot’s smiling face. On October 13, the Astro Bot Joyful DualSense is scheduled to launch and is already available for preorder from all major retailers. So, how will this joyful design compare to the more serious themes of the other limited editions?
This new hardware commemoration follows a popular wave similar to other anniversary celebrations for the God of War series. Earlier this year, PlayStation joined forces with Dark Horse Books to publish a comprehensive two-volume retrospective. Thanks to their collaboration, players can receive this hardcover box set, which includes both standard and Deluxe Editions, each holds a protective slipcase.
In both versions, over three hundred pages of concept artwork and developer commentary can be found. As a result, fans are offered a deep dive into the history of the acclaimed action series. Ultimately, it seems that there are indeed multiple ways to celebrate two decades of Kratos’s journey, through the release of the controller and the books together.
