Valve is currently working on a sequel to Team Fortress 2, according to reporter and dataminer Tyler McVicker. McVicker broke the news in a YouTube video on September 1. News of a TF2 leak appeared earlier this year, according to TheGamer.
Dataminers found a string of code in the Source 2 engine labeled “tf.” TheGamer wrote that the main proof of a sequel is an update to the original Source engine, referring to “tf.” Valve apparently altered the input tools to use TF2’s assets as placeholders for the new project.
It will be at least five years before the apparent TF2 sequel launches. Valve is currently working on the hero shooter Deadlock, which is currently in early development. Players are currently playing the closed Alpha build of the game.
TheGamer wrote, “everything points to development beginning this year, so it’ll be a while before we see anything of this new Team Fortress project – if it stays a Team Fortress project.”
Team Fortress 2 released on Steam in October 2007. It became free-to-play in 2011, after the Meet the Medic update. As of 2025, it’s been 18 years since there was a new entry in the Team Fortress franchise. Team Fortress Classic, the franchise’s first entry, came out in 1996.
The game also had a console release in October 2007 via the Orange Box. The Orange Box was a collection of Half Life 2: Episodes One and Two, Portal and TF2. Players kept the game alive through the game’s trading system and use of mods. There are countless Source Film Maker (SFM) films based on the game’s assets and characters.
The game had a big issue with bots filling the official servers. The issue was so egregious, that Valve restricted what free-to-play accounts could do. This led to the hashtags #SaveTF2 and #FixTF2 that some players adopted in their Steam usernames.
The game doesn’t receive as many updates as it used to, with the last major update being 2017’s Jungle Inferno update. Most updates are now related to weapons and maps, along with the annual Scream Fortress and Smissmas events.
I’m hopeful that the game may receive a sequel. However, I’m doubtful it will take five years for Valve to release it. It’s important to note that TF2 was in development for about a decade. Hopefully, the sequel will improve on some of the game’s flaws.
