The Necromancer’s Tale is a Lovecraftian-inspired RPG epic set to release for PC and eventually consoles as well. Last month, we previewed what to expect from this creative and exciting new indie RPG from Psychic Software, one of the first of its kind to tackle a story around the gothic art of necromancy. As of June 27, the game officially has a release date, as well as a deep dive into the gameplay mechanics of the upcoming dark fantasy. For those who loved Disco Elysium, this entry may feel very nostalgic to you.

We previously covered The Necromancer’s Tale last month and spoke on its unique and bold spin on gothic RPGs. The team describes it as a “top-down, story-richgothic RPG with an isometric viewpoint”. The story is set in Italy in the 18th century, tackling the mystery of dark arts through a narrative path to necromancy. The hope is to dig into “moral compromise, secrecy, and transformation”, themes that marry brilliantly with the format of an RPG. Players control a minor noble and leverage necromancy to gain power. Narratively, it is similar to Disco Elysium, while strategically, it has the feel of Pillars of Eternity. How far will you go for power?

Game Director Sam Redfern and Marketing Director Kirsty Halloran describe what fans should expect. “With over 400,000 words of branching narrative, 180+ unique NPCs, and a trust system that tracks what factions see and believe about you, The Necromancer’s Tale ensures that every decision, every ritual, and every conversation carries real weight. We didn’t want to create a hero’s tale; we wanted to give players the freedom to write their own descent. Whether you become a savior, a tyrant, or something worse… that’s entirely up to you.”

The team highlights some key features of The Necromancer’s Tale that should get players highly engaged. In fact, the game was highly successful on Steam Next Fest, placing in the top 6% in growth of followers, as well as placing 161 out of 2645 games in Simon Carless’ GameDiscoverCo stats. That reflects the game’s ability to truly engage players of all backgrounds.

Key Gameplay Features:

  • Master the Dark Arts: Command the dead and perform chilling necromantic rites to change your fate, and that of others.
  • Turn-Based Combat: Engage in combat using your undead minions and loyal allies. A combat auto-resolve mode is available for players who prefer to focus on the story.
  • Shape Your Story Through Dialogue: Influence allies and enemies alike through branching conversations, manipulation, and strategic deception.
  • A Long-Form Narrative Adventure: Expect 25–50 hours of gameplay, shaped by your choices, side quests, and hidden discoveries.

Does this seem exciting to you? It should, because it is an entirely unique premise that only indie games have the guts and flexibility to pull off.
