If there’s one thing that impatient gamers hate, it’s having to sit through long, annoying cutscenes. I mean, who has the time? Ok, in all seriousness, cutscenes can make for a great story arch, essential for character building and such. Still, many gamers would rather skip ahead to the actual gameplay. Baby Steps, the latest from Bennett Foddy, in collaboration with Gabe Cuzzillo and Maxi Boch, is targeting skip-happy players in a vindictive (albeit hilarious) way. It’s a speedrunner’s worst nightmare.
Known for the annoyingly hilarious QWOP and Getting Over It, Foddy is notorious for creating intentionally frustrating games to mess with players’ heads. Baby Steps is no different. Players have discovered that if they dare skip through too many cutscenes, they will be forced to sit through one excruciatingly long one—28 minutes to be exact. And, of course, it’s unskippable. Leave it up to Foddy to think up innovative, irritating ways to punish us.
This game does just that. It’s essentially an extreme walking simulator, with every element working together as one giant troll. Naturally, you would expect the act of walking to be automated, as it is in most walking simulator games. You would be wrong. Even placing one foot in front of other is a maddening process for players.
As for the cutscenes, feel free to skip if you’d like. Just know that you will be taunted with a mini-game first that you must complete to move on. That goes for every. Single. One. Speedrunners who are STILL determined to stick it to the game by skipping through and completing the mini-games, oh boy do you have another thing coming. That 28-minute unskippable cutscene I mentioned before? Yeahhh.
For impatient players, that scene is what awaits you at the end of the game. It features two characters talking about how much it sucks that, despite all of the hard work put into these cutscenes, you’re just out here skipping them. It’s one long, agonizing guilt trip. Honestly, it’s kinda hilarious if you think about it. Though, I suppose that depends on your sense of humor.
Needless to say, Baby Steps takes the cake when it comes to trolling players. I’m sure not everyone will be too happy about sitting through the half-hour guilt trip, but you’ve gotta admit, it’s a little funny. Technically, you have no one to blame but yourself. At least now you know.
So, next time you think about skipping a cutscene, you might want to stop and think to yourself: is it really worth it? You be the judge.
