Toby Fox, the creator of Undertale, wants to celebrate the groundbreaking RPG’s tenth anniversary in style. To commemorate the occasion, Fox launched a website where players could share their favorite memories of the game. However, in true Undertale fashion, the unexpected happened.
The Undertale 10th anniversary website invites you to share a memory of what Undertale means to you. After sharing your memory, you can choose an avatar and edit it with the painting tools if you wish. If you’re feeling extra-creative, you can even create an avatar from scratch. The website says that your memory might be shared publicly, though it’s currently unknown what it will be used for. True to form, Toby Fox didn’t offer straight answers when he tweeted about the website:
“It’s almost been 10 years since UNDERTALE released. Now, I’m looking for your memories. Let’s turn back together. Face the flower and speak.”
According to GamesRadar, the site crashed almost immediately after launching. Fox tweeted that, “There are so many submissions, the site is having trouble. If your submission is stuck on ‘Submitting’, please try sending it again later. Your submission should be auto-saved in your browser.” I had no issues sharing my memory, so the site seems to have been fixed now, but it goes to show what a cultural phenomenon Undertale has become.
Perhaps Toby Fox will select some memories to be used in a future Deltarune chapter. Perhaps they will be shared on the website when Undertale’s actual tenth birthday rolls around on August 15. Of course, since this is Toby Fox, there’s a chance that this is one giant troll move, and the memories won’t be used for anything. In any case, this is an occasion well worth celebrating. The charming, unsettling world of Undertale and the memorable characters who inhabit it will forever be part of our consciousness.
